America's Dominance is Over?

America just turned 250 years old. Congratulations.

Would the country end up being the one that ran on Jim Crow, or the one that marched to end it? The one that dropped ordnance on strangers a hemisphere away, or the one that eventually said “yeah, that was bad” and tried a group hug? The one that mailed women to jail for discussing contraception, or the one that let them make their own medical decisions like adults?

Historically, the smart money was against. The republic shipped with two original sins baked directly into the founding paperwork (settler colonialism and chattel slavery) and from that opening balance, a genuinely heroic amount of interest has accrued ever since. By any reasonable actuarial standard, no country should be expected to climb out of a hole that deep.

The idea that America was structurally going to keep winning, that history had a direction, and the direction was his people. For a long stretch, this looked less like a belief and more like a natural law, the sort of thing you didn’t argue with any more than gravity. American dominance wasn’t a claim anyone had to defend. It was the water everyone swam in. That assumption doesn’t hold anymore. Not because some rival empire out-innovated anybody or out-hustled. It’s simpler and more embarrassing than that: the country stopped doing the things that made the assumption true in the first place. It kept expecting the reputation to renew automatically, like a payservice nobody remembered to cancel. Dominance, it turns out, was never a birthright. It was a bill that came due every generation, and this generation let it lapse.
