Michael Bishop · The Tampa Monitor

During the June 4, 2026 discussion about school zone speed cameras Chief of Staff John Bennett discussed how the Tampa Police Department handles about half a million calls a year and that a lot of those would be complaint driven; a "reactive state."

Part of Tampa Police Department's transparency dashboard includes a rolling 7 day list of calls for service. Tampa Monitor started tracking that to get a glimpse at what makes up those half a million calls each year.

Over the two months from June 14 through August 13, Tampa police dispatched 59,364 calls for service — an average of about 973 calls a day, every day. Here is what those calls were, using the department's own dispatch labels, listed exactly as they appear in the feed.

What this is, and isn't

A few things to keep in mind before reading anything into these numbers:

  • This is a two-month snapshot, not a trend. Sixty-one days of summer can't tell you whether any of this is going up, down, or is typical of the rest of the year.
  • These are dispatch labels — what the call was coded as when an officer was sent, not what an officer found on arrival, and not whether a crime occurred. A DISTURBANCE call can turn out to be nothing; a NATURE UNKNOWN call can turn out to be anything.
  • Most of the call labels are self-explanatory however we did reach out to ask about a couple of the labels
    • “Building Check” = Circumstances that exist warranting an officer to search the premises.
    • “Information” = Used as classification for any type of incident not covered by another dispatch signal.
    • “Project” may refer to the classification of “Special Project,” which is a specifically focused effort.
