Each twist is an actionable approachable idea for doing something creative this week. Here’s how it works. Easy peasy. Challenge open to all. Free, no registration required. Start anywhere. Do any or all. I’ll share a set of 5 actionable “twists” each week this month. Now here’s the fun part. If more than one resonates/sounds tempting (and you have time), that’s wonderful, but one is enough.

1. Write a numbered list.

Any list. But it needs to be numbered. ㊼ Analog, on paper. Embellished if desired. A list of lists. A list of things that happened. A list of albums you have played on a turntable. A list of library books. A list of your favorite flavors of jelly beans.

2. Make stripes.

   Any medium, any method, analog or digital, vertical or horizontal.

   

   

   

3. Write a stream of consciousness paragraph (optional: cut up for future collage).

   
   One of my favorite examples is from 2015. On the top right corner of this page, I taped part of a stream of consciousness note where I vented frustrations. Sometimes I use them for collage. And some people light them on fire, which works too.

   

4. Collage a grid.

Glue together like items and arrange in a structure remotely resembling a grid. Go ahead and stretch the definition if you wish! Background & inspo: Inviting Creativity via Grids.

5. Brainstorm connotations of one word.

My process is to write the word(s) in the center of an index card. The space intentionally constrains the possibilities. 🌞 Then I write on the imaginary sunbeams. I brainstormed newsletter as I went through the process of moving from email-only to substack after a decade. Word nerd? 🥸 Me too.

“Your mission, should you choose to accept it.” 🧰💥 Here are the rules for this specific prompt. You can use a dictionary, thesaurus, wikipedia, etc. but do not use AI to help brainstorm. Manually search and think through how things work.. and your brain does the synthesis. Connotations, related words, synonyms, whatever comes to mind.

The MacArthur Fellowship Foundation defines creativity as follows. “Creativity comprises the drive and ability to make something new or to connect the seemingly unconnected in significant ways. It enriches our understanding of ourselves, our communities, and the world we inhabit. Creativity can take many forms: asking questions that open up new areas of exploration; developing innovative solutions to pressing problems; inventing novel methods, tools, or art forms; bringing together ideas and approaches from different disciplines; or producing works that broaden the horizons of the imagination.”
