Each twist is an actionable approachable idea for doing something creative this week. Here’s how it works. Easy peasy. Challenge open to all. Free, no registration required. Start anywhere. Do any or all. I’ll share a set of 5 actionable “twists” each week this month. Now here’s the fun part. If more than one resonates/sounds tempting (and you have time), that’s wonderful, but one is enough.

It is 100% OK if it’s pure chaos! This one has a bit of everything plus a self-inking date stamp and a hand-carved eraser stamp (looks like an ogee or the bottle from I Dream of Jeannie)!
Draw an emoji rainbow.
With markers, pens, or pencils… draw a rainbow of emoji/icons using as reference one made with your keyboard. Way back in Daisy Yellow № 112 the creative assignment was to make an emoji rainbow with your keyboard. Here’s mine (it shows up as rainbows in Safari, YMMV): 📛🌷🌸🧶🦁📒🍋🟩🍃🦖🫐🌀🪁👾🐿️🖤
Draw repeating patterns.
Choose your drawing tool(s) and fill a page with repeating patterns! Analog, digital, whatever. Here are two examples! a) sampled a zillion digital brushes, 2026. b) Moleskine, 2023.
Photograph something through something else.
Look for a scene where there are layers of light or shapes. Positive and negative space. Trees. The in-between. This in front of that. Overlaps. Pix from our London trip last year.
Construct found poetry.2
This may seem like a collage prompt but it is not. This is about going on a treasure hunt for phrases and then moving phrases around to find something that resonates. Cut out phrases and arrange on your table <if desired, glue to a background in your art journal or in a notebook>. Pretty sure I’ve shared this many times; I love this ephemeral moment, a happy accident of words arranged and never glued down.

You are welcome to extrapolate or alter a “twist” to make it apply to the kind of work you are doing.
Per poets.org, “Found poems take existing texts and refashion them, reorder them, and present them as poems. The literary equivalent of a collage, found poetry is often made from newspaper articles, street signs, graffiti, speeches, letters, or even other poems. A pure found poem consists exclusively of outside texts: the words of the poem remain as they were found, with few additions or omissions. Decisions of form, such as where to break a line, are left to the poet.”
