Mental Health Spa Day , our next piece in our series on emotional deprivation.
This is a gentle non-clinical piece about a common human pattern: using appearance (or fitness, attractiveness status) as an attempt to feel chosen, secure, and safe.
Quick idea:
Beauty can open doors. But it can’t guarantee what happens after the door opens.
Beauty increases access. It doesn’t increase emotional capacity.
What “deprivation” means (in plain language)
Deprivation is what happens when you’ve had to do too much alone for too long. Even if you’re successful, smart, and high-functioning, part of you still feels like love is scarce.
When you’re starved for it, attention feels like relief. Like a warm drink on a cold day.
The hidden belief A lot of people carry this belief : “If I look good enough, I’ll be chosen.”
Why it’s so confusing
It works…sort of.
Looking good can get:
compliments
dates
attention
sex
messages
validation
But it doesn’t get you:
reliability
consistency
kindness
commitment
someone who will show up when it matters
Women and men both do this. This isn’t just a women’s issue.
• Women may try to be younger, thinner, prettier more desirable.
• Men may try to be richer more muscular more impressive more “high value.”
Different costumes. Same nervous system message:
“If I become more desirable, I won’t be abandoned.”
Attention vs Care (spa-day truth)
Attention is cheap. A message takes 6 seconds. Care costs. Care looks like time, follow-through, thoughtfulness, protection, planning, and respect.
A gentle reset
You don’t need to stop caring about how you look. You just need to stop using your appearance as a bargaining chip to gain emotional safety.
Try this mini-practice Next time you feel the urge to “improve yourself” (after rejection or ambiguity) ask:
Am I trying to feel beautiful—or trying to feel safe?
What would real care look like here?
What is one boundary that protects my dignity today?
Who can I connect with that doesn’t require a performance?
If this resonates, you’re not broken. You’re human. And your nervous system is trying to protect you. More soon in this series: deprivation + overachievement, deprivation + romance, deprivation + loneliness.
