The accusations stem from a leaked secret document, initially reported by Hebrew outlet Maariv. The arrests occurred between October and early February, with one specific employee allegedly involved in the Hamas attack on October 7th. On February 16th, Israel publicly accused 12 UNRWA employees of participating in various incidents, including the taking of hostages in Southern Israel.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that beyond the published 12 workers, there are indications based on intelligence that over 30 UNRWA workers were involved in the same events. These workers are accused of participating in the massacre, facilitating hostage-taking, and engaging in looting and theft from Israeli communities. Gallant estimates that at least 12% of UNRWA staff have ties to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Investigations into the UN, particularly the UNRWA, have revealed connections to extremist organizations in the region. A Wall Street Journal report indicated that at least 10% of UNRWA workers have strong Islamic ties. According to an Israeli official, the UNRWA has become a breeding ground for Hamas and other radical groups, allowing them to thrive and recruit. The gravity of these ties between the organization and terrorism is deeply concerning.
