June 30’s SCOTUS decision that trans girls/women don’t count as girls/women in sports is heartbreaking, if unsurprising.
I think about my friend’s kindergartener, so excited to wear a one-piece swimsuit made for her so she can swim on the girls’ team comfortably. I almost wrote “compete” on the girls’ team, but, come on, they are little kids. It’s about play, team belongingness, and learning discipline and good sportspersonship, and getting exercise. (And, yes, there are competitive levels, too, and trans women/girls belong there, too.)
A former instructor and fellow writer wrote in an email, “You must be dealing with so much and blogging like crazy with the recent tragedies involving trans people.” Honestly, I didn’t know which tragedy she meant. This was months ago. But it could have been yesterday, or the day before. It will be true in two weeks and two months, too.
I wrote back,
“Actually, I’ve found I need to step back from the news for my mental health. I deactivated FB and deleted Instagram from my phone. What I get comes from my Substack feed and list serves, but even those, I limit.
For Substack, I chose not to post about the latest news and current events because I know it would create undue stress trying to keep up, and I’d feel guilty about missing or skipping some events.
A year ago, I was way too deep in it. My fear was out of control. Unsustainable.
Our nervous systems are not made to take in this much information, news from around the world, all day, every day. I cannot stay up to date on everything anti-trans while keeping a decent level of mental health.
I cannot go deep into the latest decision. I am no legal scholar or policy person, but I trust several folks I follow (or even know personally) enough to recommend their takes. Here are some good ones & their analyses or responses.
Legally Trans (Chase Strangio—also check out his Instagram, which is more up to date)
Transitics (Aleksandra Vaca)
Who’ve I missed? Any others folks recommend?
