I just planned our entire New Year’s Bahamas trip in 20 minutes using AI. Not “got some ideas” — full hotel recommendation, day-by-day itinerary, restaurant picks, off-the-beaten-path finds, and a flag on what to book before it sells out.
The secret is knowing exactly what to ask. Here are the 5 prompts I use for every kind of trip.
PROMPT 1 — Family Vacation Planner
“We’re planning a [length] trip to [destination or region] with [number] kids ages [ages]. Here’s who I’m working with: [one sentence describing each kid’s personality or interests]. We want [beach/adventure/culture/mix]. Budget is [budget range or ‘moderate/splurge’]. Give me the best place to stay, top family excursions, best restaurants, and 3 things we wouldn’t find on a basic Google search.”
PROMPT 2 — Girls Trip Finder
“I’m planning a girls trip for [number] women in our [30s/40s]. We want [vibes — relaxed beach, city exploring, spa-focused, etc.]. We’re flying out of [city]. Budget per person is around [amount]. Give me 3 destination options with pros and cons for each, the best neighborhood to stay in for each, and one non-negotiable experience at each location.”
PROMPT 3 — Where Should We Go
“We have [number of days] and a budget of [amount] for two people flying out of [city]. We want somewhere that feels like a real trip — not just a long weekend. We care most about [food/beaches/culture/nightlife/nature]. Give me 4 options we may not have thought of, ranked by value for money.”
PROMPT 4 — All-Inclusive Deep Dive
“I’m looking for the best all-inclusive resort for [couples/family/girls trip] in [Mexico/Caribbean/general]. My priorities in order are: [list 3 things — e.g. beach quality, food, pools]. I do NOT want [any dealbreakers — loud party scene, small rooms, etc.]. Budget is [per person per night range]. Give me your top 3 with honest pros and cons.”
PROMPT 5 — Day by Day Itinerary
“Build me a [number]-day itinerary for [destination]. We are [who you are — couple, family, solo]. We want a mix of [tourist highlights] and [local/off the beaten path]. We like to [eat well/be active/relax/explore on foot]. Include morning, afternoon, and evening for each day and flag anything that needs to be booked in advance.”
Use these with Claude, ChatGPT, or whatever AI you’re already using. The more specific you are with the details in the brackets, the better the answer.
