Suzanne Bird-Harris · Suzanne Says...

My daughters-in-law entered my life on the same day — January 6, 2011. It was a momentous day in my life for reasons other than their appearance. Why is a story for another day, but looking back, I’d have to give ‘momentous’ a capital M because of them.

In many ways, they couldn’t be more different if they tried. Yet, they have many things in common. Badasses, each of them. They are fiercely protective of those they love, and I have had the privilege of witnessing both of them defend and protect my sons. No matter what else is true, I know for sure these two women love my sons with the same intensity as I do. That comforts me in a way I didn’t expect.

The ‘Norma Rae’ is strong in them. They’re hardheaded, stubborn, heels dug in up to their chins if they feel attacked…ragey some days…just like me.

My relationships with them have grown in spurts over the years, as relationships do. What’s interesting to me, though, is how these two women have taught me about myself. Through my relationship with each of them, I know better who I am and how I want to show up.

This year, I see the beginnings of bonds that could outlast me. Or maybe they’ve been there and I’m just now seeing them, now that I’m starting my third act. Who knows. I’m just glad I see them. These two will keep my family together after I’m gone.

In the meantime, and in addition to dealing with whatever bs the Cheeto Felon wants to pull, I’m grateful these two women are my family. I sure do love them.

Thankfully, this year Jan. 6th didn’t make the news. Happy Anniversary, ladies. Here’s to another 14 and hopefully several more.
