Today - AI, Democracy and a Hollywood blockbuster on the horizon. The systems shaping our digital lives are facing growing pressure to change. From another high-profile AI safety controversy and renewed conversations about regulating artificial intelligence, to debates over age verification, the tech landscape continues to reveal both its risks and its opportunities. Meanwhile, Hollywood is preparing to revisit one of Silicon Valley’s defining stories with The Social Reckoning, signaling that the cultural conversation around Big Tech is far from over. We’ve got October 9th circled on our calendar; do you?
Another Day, Another AI Disaster
Last Friday, AP News reported on an announcement made by Anthropic, in which the company stated its artificial intelligence models hacked into three more organizations during testing. This announcement comes just days after the OpenAI Hugging Face scandal.
It begs the question– how many scandals does it take for AI deceleration? The Transformer Substack answers this question thoughtfully within their piece “The AI slowdown is coming”. In the article, the authors contend that an AI slowdown is imminent, however none if it needs to be a coordinated slowdown or “pacing”. What we should expect is an initial wave of self-regulation followed by concrete regulation. SMC will be closely monitoring this progression.
Where are the Democratic Lifeboats?
In a lively new episode of “Firewall with Bradley Tusk”, Tusk spoke with with Harvard Law professor Lawrence Lessig about the fundamental threats to American democracy and potential paths forward. In the episode, Lessig optimistically paints a future in which Super PACs can and will be ended without the overturning of Citizens United while Tusk leans on mobile voting as a way to escape political extremism. No matter the proposed democratic lifeboat, both men agree that the culprit is the engagement-based media economy. MediaPost has a great report from Steve R here. If you’re looking for a glimmer of democratic optimism amongst a sea of disparaging headlines, this episode is for you!
Age Verification is Harder Than You Think
In another piece from the Transformer Substack, author Veronica Irwin takes a deep dive into one of our most pressing digital dilemmas– age verification. The piece asks the question– is age gating AI feasible, both practically and ethically? Irwin unpacks the issues of access, privacy, and free speech while reminding us that “simply restricting children from accessing what we decide they shouldn’t online seems like it should be as simple as it is in real life. The reality is it’s anything but.”
Is In-Person Connection Becoming Trendy?
And just in case you’re wondering about a summertime of logging off, NBC Bay Area and various X posts report on an exciting digital detox study conducted by cognitive neuroscientist Dr.Sahar Yousef at UC Berkeley. In the study, students embarked on a 9-week digital detox in which they were encouraged to set and stick to personal digital intentions. After the completion of the study, Dr.Yousef found that participants experienced less anxiety, less depression, and more mindfulness.
Dr.Yousef brings up a good point– we all should be looking inward, establishing personal digital intentions, and working with our communities around us to hold us accountable.
The Next Big Cinematic Bang
Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, the long-awaited follow-up to The Social Network, is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the fall. As Variety reported when Sony released the first trailer, the film shifts from Facebook’s founding to the revelations of The Facebook Files, with Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg and Mikey Madison as whistleblower Frances Haugen. Sony has already released a teaser, unveiled character posters, and continues to stand by its October 9 release date. But the production has also raised eyebrows. Deadline, quoting Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera, reported that additional photography scheduled for August forced the film to miss a hoped-for Venice premiere because it simply would not be finished in time. For a prestige film expected to compete in awards season, the combination of an active marketing campaign and last-minute filming has made The Social Reckoning one of Hollywood’s most closely watched productions.
Here’s the poster, just put up at a NYC neighborhood movie theatre. Exciting!
