Hello and welcome to this month’s Questions & Insights!
This time, we’re exploring some fascinating topics: how introverted and extroverted brains are wired differently, how hearing loss impacts the brain, why quiet spaces are crucial for introverts, and how hearing loss can alter our experience of social situations.

Let’s start with the basics: what makes an introvert’s brain different from an extrovert’s?

Before we explore how introverts’ and extroverts’ brains work differently, let’s look at how they typically behave in social situations:

  • Extroverts thrive on small talk; introverts, on the other hand, seek deep, meaningful conversations.

  • Extroverts gain energy from socialising — introverts feel drained after too much interaction.

  • Extroverts respond quickly — introverts pause to process.

  • Extroverts tend to enjoy crowds; introverts prefer one-on-one or small group settings.

  • Extroverts jump into conversations — introverts reflect before speaking.

These differences are not just personality quirks but are deeply rooted in how our brains function and process information.

Our autonomic nervous system has two main modes:

  • The sympathetic system activates our “fight or flight” response.

  • The parasympathetic system helps calm us down and restore energy.

Extroverts are more likely to rely on the sympathetic system. They thrive on external stimulation, adrenaline, and fast-paced engagement. This makes them feel alert, energised, and ready for action.

Introverts, by contrast, rely more on the parasympathetic system, which supports rest, reflection, and internal processing. It’s why we’re naturally drawn to calmer environments and slower rhythms — they match how our nervous system operates.

Certain parts of the brain are more active in introverts, influencing how they process information and respond to the world around them.

  • The right front insula is associated with empathy, emotional insight, and self-reflection. Introverts — especially those who are sensitive — tend to exhibit more activity in this area. It explains our strong emotional responses and need for solitude to process them.

  • Broca’s area prepares us for speech. Introverts use this region not just to speak, but to internally process thoughts and sensory input before responding — one reason we often prefer writing over spontaneous conversation.

  • The frontal lobes are responsible for decision-making, planning, and logic. Introverts tend to access these areas more intensely, which supports our affinity for research, analysis, and careful reflection.
    Extroverts also use these regions, but tend to make quicker decisions and rely more on external cues.

  • The left hippocampus is responsible for storing long-term memories and personal experiences. Introverts tend to access this area more when responding to a question, which can take time and result in deeper, more thoughtful answers.

Introverts process external stimuli through longer and more complex neural pathways. The signals often pass through multiple regions tied to memory, reflection, and emotional context before we respond.

This can make us appear slow or hesitant, but what’s happening is deep, layered thinking.

Research also shows that introverts tend to have more grey matter in areas related to abstract thinking and decision-making. This helps explain our rich inner worlds, tendency to overthink, and slower reaction times. It also reveals why we need time to process our thoughts before responding — and why our responses are often carefully considered.

Introverts aren’t broken or awkward — we’re just wired differently.
And that wiring is beautiful.

Once I understood how my brain worked — that I wasn’t slow, just deep — I stopped trying to fix myself. I started honouring the way I process the world and found ways to communicate that honoured me and those around me.

It’s not about being faster or louder.
It’s about being true to how you’re made — and allowing others to do the same.

Hearing isn’t just about your ears—it’s a partnership between your auditory system and your brain. Sound enters through the outer ear, travels through the middle and inner ear, and is finally delivered to the brain for processing. If any part of this chain is disrupted, the result can be temporary or permanent hearing loss.

The brain identifies the sound, its origin, and its loudness or pitch. But when hearing is impaired, the brain receives incomplete or unclear input, making it harder to interpret what you're hearing. Over time, it adapts to this change through neuroplasticity, its remarkable ability to reorganise and reroute itself.

Let’s examine how untreated hearing loss can impact the brain and life beyond sound.

When the brain stops receiving enough auditory input, it begins to lose the ability to process sound. You may hear a person’s voice, but your brain can’t make sense of the words.

Even after starting to wear hearing aids, your brain may still struggle—it needs time to rebuild the neural pathways it has lost. That’s why early diagnosis and consistent use of hearing aids are so important.

With hearing loss, your brain works overtime to fill in gaps and make sense of sound. It diverts energy from other vital functions like memory, focus, and decision-making. Listening becomes exhausting. And when all your effort goes into hearing, there’s not much left to remember or process what was said.

Hearing loss often leads to social withdrawal. Conversations feel harder to follow, especially in noisy environments. Over time, this isolation can lead to reduced brain stimulation and increase the risk of depression.

Research shows that hearing loss is linked to 8% of dementia cases annually. Dementia patients with hearing loss experience a 30–40% faster decline, and cognitive decline begins on average 3.2 years earlier than in those with normal hearing.

The hearing and balance systems share the same nerve pathway to the brain. When hearing is affected, balance may also be compromised, increasing the risk of serious falls, particularly in older adults.

When the auditory cortex is lacking stimulation, nearby senses step in and utilise that brain space. This is why people who are blind often develop sharper senses, or individuals with hearing loss may experience heightened senses of sight or touch.

But there’s a downside: the brain becomes less efficient at processing speech, especially in noisy or fast-paced environments.

To compensate for hearing loss, the brain may reallocate resources from the frontal lobe, which manages short-term memory and executive function. This might help you get through the conversation, but it comes at a cost. You may not remember what was said, because you used all your mental energy just trying to hear it.

Not all hearing challenges come from the ears. Sometimes, the issue lies in how the brain processes sound.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)—also known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)—occurs when the ears function correctly, but the brain struggles to interpret the information it receives. It can affect children and adults, and may even occur alongside other types of hearing loss.

People with APD may:

  • Struggle to locate where the sounds are coming from

  • Find it hard to understand speech in noisy places

  • Have difficulty focusing when listening

  • Experience reading, spelling, or language challenges

  • Struggle to follow complex or multi-step instructions

  • Have trouble learning new languages or enjoying music

  • Find it challenging to retain spoken information

There is no known cure for APD, but tools such as FM systems, hearing aids (where applicable), and auditory training can help support better listening and learning outcomes.

Whether caused by hearing loss or an auditory processing disorder, sound challenges affect more than just your ears. They reshape how your brain works—and how you experience the world.

Our brains operate on a use it or lose it principle. Without regular auditory input or support, the brain gradually loses its ability to process sound effectively.

While hearing aids haven’t been proven to prevent dementia, they offer vital benefits:

  • Reintroduce sound to the brain and encourage new neural connections

  • Improve communication and reduce listening fatigue

  • Support social engagement and deepen relationships

  • Help ease isolation and prevent depression.

If you're noticing changes in your hearing or struggling to process sound, don’t wait. Get a hearing test or speak to a specialist. The sooner you seek help, the better your brain can adapt. And the more fully you can participate in life.

As we saw in Question 1: How Do Introverts' Brains Differ from Extroverts’ — and Why It Affects Social Interactions?, introverts tend to rely more on the parasympathetic system, which aids them in rest, reflection, and internal processing. This draws them to calmer environments and slower rhythms—settings that align with their nervous system's natural functioning.

Introverts are more sensitive to sensory input and can quickly become overwhelmed in busy and noisy environments, such as loud music, flashing lights, and excessive movement. Since stimuli travel a longer route to reach the brain than in extroverts, it requires more mental energy. This longer road was also discussed in more detail in Question 1. When the brain is overloaded with sensory stimuli, it can lead to an introvert hangover, with symptoms like brain fog, irritability, muscle tension, headaches, and fatigue.

If you are an introvert with hearing loss, you may also experience the effects of noise fatigue and listening fatigue. Noise fatigue occurs when hearing aids amplify background noise, thereby increasing auditory overload. Listening fatigue is caused by the intense focus required to hear, lipread, interpret facial expressions and body language—all while trying to keep up with a conversation. Your brain must process and interpret all this input to make sense of what’s being said, adding another layer of effort and exhaustion.

Introverts prefer meaningful conversations and deep connections, often occurring more effectively in small groups and quieter settings. These quieter spaces also make it easier for them to process and respond without the burden of constant distractions.

They are also highly emotionally attuned—deeply aware of both their feelings and those of others. While this makes them exceptional listeners, it can also be draining, especially in overstimulating or crowded settings.

Introverts are less sensitive to dopamine and serotonin, the feel-good chemicals, so they require more to experience a sense of calm, focus, and to quiet their racing thoughts. The introverted brain releases these chemicals during creative activities, reading, meditation, and exercise.

In everyday life, this often manifests in preferences such as introverts shopping online rather than visiting shopping malls, watching a movie at home instead of going to the cinema, or taking a quiet hike in nature rather than going to the gym.

From the above, we can conclude that introverts are not antisocial—they prefer to engage differently to prevent sensory overload and conserve their social energy.

Hearing loss can significantly reduce a person’s ability to enjoy social settings, leading to noise and listening fatigue.

Even though digital hearing aids prioritise speech, they can’t completely eliminate background noise. Hearing aids amplify the whole soundscape, and while they enhance speech clarity, your brain still has to filter out background distractions—like beeping tills at the store, muffled conversations in noisy cafés or meetings, and overlapping chatter around you.

Unfortunately, wearing hearing aids doesn’t mean perfect hearing. You still have to fill in gaps, guess what was said, and navigate muffled speech or thick accents while concentrating on lip reading, facial expressions, and body language.

Digital hearing aid technology enables hearing care professionals (HCPS) to create profiles tailored to specific environments, such as home, work, or travel. But life gets messy, and the soundscape can shift in seconds, from relative quiet to sudden sounds like a dog barking, a neighbour’s lawnmower, or sirens in traffic. Adaptive technology can’t switch modes fast enough to keep up.

To reduce the discomfort caused by loud sounds, digital hearing aids employ compression, which can distort certain sounds. Listening through that distortion is tiring and irritating, much like trying to tune into a fuzzy radio station.

Your brain is always on in social situations. Add the emotional layer (always present in human interaction) and the pressure to respond appropriately, and it’s easy to see why social settings become exhausting for someone with hearing loss.

Consider this analogy:
You’re a security guard at a busy airport, using hearing aids as your tools to detect suspicious activity. Daily, you deal with people rushing past, mumbling questions, announcements echoing overhead, and constant facial scanning and lipreading. You can’t switch off—because every missed cue might be vital. Even with your tools, you’re constantly scanning, deciding, sorting, and reacting—never truly off duty.
You’re not tired because the tools failed. You’re exhausted because you’re doing the job of five people.

Another major factor is the lack of accommodation and inclusion. Many public places do not offer assistive technologies like hearing loops, and transcription apps are often ineffective, especially in noisy environments or when dealing with large groups. Poor lighting makes lipreading and interpreting facial expressions more difficult.

When people fail to repeat or rephrase after being asked, or when requested accommodations, such as being seated near the main speaker, are ignored, it sends a clear message.
If something is available to everyone else but not to someone with hearing loss, it’s not just inconvenient—it’s exclusion.
