Trump once again set off alarm bells this week about what’s going to happen this November, expressing an openness to declaring a “national security emergency” and federalize the conduct of the midterms.

Let’s be clear: declaring a national emergency does not in fact give the president any new powers over elections. As election law expert Rick Hasen explains, this is likely more about delegitimizing Democratic victories in advance and convincing folks it’s not worth voting than it is an actual plan. But those are dangers in and of themselves, and there’s plenty he can and has threatened to do to subvert the vote in November – from the steps he and the GOP have already taken to raise barriers to the ballot box and gerrymander the power out of our votes; to looming dangers like Trump sending his thugs to the polls to intimidate voters, seizing ballot boxes, interfering with certification or even refusing to seat Democratic winners where the GOP is “disputing” outcomes.

It’s scary as hell. And while “earn a victory too big to steal” is an important part of waking us from this nightmare (see ways to help do so here!), it’s just one part of the work ahead.

🙋🏽‍♀️ We’ve pulled together a new action page, running down ways we can get engaged in the work of election protection starting right now. Like our midterm action page, this will be continually updated as we learn of new opportunities to volunteer, and we hope it can be a reference and a resource for you. Check it out here and at tinyurl.com/2026electionprotectionvols – or skip straight to volunteering with: 🙋🏻

STOP THE STEAL

Delaware is one of the nation’s most reliably blue states, currently featuring a supermajority in the state senate and just short of one in the lower chamber. It’s also a longtime corporate haven, where 60% of Fortune 500 companies were incorporated, due to business-friendly and consumer-unfriendly tax law and regulation. This is a product of state capture, as starkly demonstrated last year: when the Delaware Court of Chancery struck down a $55.8 billion pay package for Elon Musk challenged by shareholders, the legislature promptly passed the “billionaires’ bill” SB 21, written by his law firm, to make sure he could still get his money.

The Working Families Party is working to change that and get leaders into elected office who will fight for us and not the super-wealthy. In next month’s Democratic primary, they’ve endorsed a slate of challengers taking on incumbents who helped pass the billionaires’ bill, and they’re starting to gear up to get out the vote for these folks. ☎️ We can sign up for shifts turning out voters for Rae Krantz in House District 6 on Thursdays starting TODAY and running through September 10th here, and make calls for Shane Darby in District 1 this Saturday at noon here. ☎️

Americans are feeling the consequences of Trump’s disastrous policies every time they need to buy something, and we’re fed up. This could be a great opportunity to get folks off the sidelines and registered to vote. That’s the work of Field Team 6, a grassroots volunteer army doing partisan voter registration at large scale. 💬 This month, they’re going to be hosting another series of textbanks to reach unregistered likely Democrats in key states and swing districts and try to get them activated, starting this Friday at 6PM ET and continuing on Saturday the 22nd and Saturday the 29th at 4PM ET. Let’s sign up for a shift here. 💬

TEXT TO REGISTER NEW VOTERS

Election season is gearing up and Activate America is here to help us win with postcards to voters. In all the election noise, handwritten postcards can feel personal in a way mass mailers and robocalls don't, and research on voter turnout shows a real, handwritten note can nudge infrequent voters to the polls. With margins small in many close races, every postcard counts. Campaigns are now active for Senate candidates Troy Jackson in Maine, Roy Cooper in North Carolina, Sherrod Brown in Ohio and James Talarico in Texas, along with four swing congressional seats in Pennsylvania, and more are coming soon. 📬 We can find more details and mailing deadlines here. Whether we are new volunteers or have written for Activate America before, we can sign up to order scripts along with lists of names and addresses. Let’s start today! 📬

BEAR DOWN FOR MIDTERMS

The lower 48 states just sweated through the hottest July on record, in what’s likely to be the coldest summer for the rest of our lives. And the mortality rate from extreme heat is rising with the temperature. It’s a particular risk for farmworkers and other folks in essential industries who need to earn a paycheck, heat dome or no heat dome. And a bunch of politicians who spend their days huddled around air conditioners are trying to make it harder to protect them.

In 2024, the Biden Administration drafted a rule that would require employers to provide workers with water and a cool place to rest when heat and humidity hit 80 degrees. Republicans and their corporate backers saw a possible impediment to making a few more bucks, and they’re not risking another Democrat putting it in place. Right now, they’re pushing H.R. 6213, which would ban OSHA from creating or enforcing any national heat safety regulations. They passed it through the House Education and Workforce Committee on party lines late last month. 🗣️ Let’s let them know this is a betrayal of working folks, and we want them to kill the bill and push forward the Asuncion Valdivia Act (H.R. 4443) to require a heat standard be put in place instead. We can use this call tool from the AFL-CIO and this e-mail tool from the United Farm Workers. 🗣️
