Since ICE agent David Brouillette, a man who got his job as an armed agent of the state despite his history of domestic abuse, shot and killed Johan Sebastián Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine on July 13th, the community has not let up in their calls for justice. They’ve been taking action daily to demand an independent investigation of this murder, a commitment from our elected representatives that they’ll work to abolish ICE, and an end to the tactics that put our friends and neighbors in danger.

Too many elected officials have been putting the deportation machine first and families last. Maine’s Senator Susan Collins was among those who voted to hand ICE another $70 billion to break up families and terrorize our streets while taking healthcare, food assistance, and other essentials away from working families, and she and her colleagues are refusing to take responsibility for the deadly consequences of their vote.

The immigrant community in Maine, the Maine People’s Alliance and other allies are holding a protest at Senator Collins’ office in Biddeford on Tuesday. They’re asking us to join them in a national week of action from August 10-16, with protests in every district where members of Congress voted to expand ICE. Whether it’s a rally, vigil, press conference, community meal, march, office visit, die-in, empty-chair installation, or creative action, we want our leaders to hear the message: fund care, not cruelty. We’re demanding full and independent investigations into ICE killings, protection of the witnesses, an end to local collaboration with ICE, congressional use of their oversight authority, reallocating deportation funds to SNAP and Medicaid and a path to citizenship.

We can find Care Not Cruelty actions to attend near us here. If there’s not one on the books yet, we can register our own here and find an organizing toolkit here.

FIND AN ACTION

HOST OUR OWN

Also coming next week, a coalition including Food & Water Watch, the Athena Coalition, Make the Road and the People’s Action Institute is using the opportunity of Congress being on recess to make our voices heard in favor of a federal data center moratorium. We can find Dump Big Tech actions to attend near us here.

PEOPLE OVER BILLIONAIRES

And tomorrow, the League of Women Voters is holding than 300 actions nationwide TOMORROW to rise and unite for voting rights. We can find one near us here.

ORGANIZE FOR VOTING RIGHTS

House by house, street by street, community by community, we are organizing to throw a wrench in the deportation machine and protect our friends and neighbors. The Workers Over Billionaires coalition has been encouraging the growth of neighborhood defense teams, folks who are stepping up now to prepare for ICE raids. They’re going to work sites and businesses to spread the word about our Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights and make sure every workplace is prepared to push back when Trump’s thugs show up on their doorstep. They’ve trained more than 3,000 volunteers so far this year, and they’re coming together with the DSA to expand their work. ✊🏿 We can join them for a Neighborhood Defense Team Training TOMORROW at 1PM ET to be part of it by signing up here. ✊🏻

TRAINING TOMORROW

It’s been a long time since Iowa was competitive for Democrats. But as prices have skyrocketed and Trump’s approval ratings have collapsed, it’s emerged as an electoral battleground again.

Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand, the only remaining non-GOP statewide official, has consistently led MAHA-aligned businessman Zach Lahn in the race for governor, and new polling has him up 48-43 – outside the margin of error. He’s up by 26 points among independents and is winning 1 in 10 Trump voters. State rep. Josh Turek, a populist born with spina bifida who has won gold medals in the Paralympics and won a traditionally red legislative district by hauling himself up voters’ steps using his arms to knock doors, isn’t in quite as strong position as the Dem pick for an open Senate seat, but only trails GOP Congresswoman Ashley Hinson by three points and has built strong favorability numbers. Trump, meanwhile, has a disapproval rating of 51%. We are in position to score some significant victories.

☎️ Let’s put in the work. The Iowa Democrats have phonebanks running for the entire ticket on Tuesday evenings from 7-9PM ET, and we can sign up to join them here. Team Sand has shifts of its own on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights we can be part of here, and we can get updates on upcoming opportunities from the Turek campaign here. ☎️

LET'S GET TO WORK

Facing threats, political pressure and a Supreme Court majority that has frequently not had their backs, lower court judges are still doing vitally important work to keep this administration’s power within the bounds of the law. (Making it all the more important Democrats hold the line on keeping Trump from stacking the courts.) Let’s acknowledge their work and send encouragement to keep fighting… and let’s also take a moment to send a kind word to a physician who helped lead our country through one of its darkest times.

Led by Rand Paul, the Senate Homeland Security Committee passed a resolution on party lines yesterday holding Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt over his use of the Fifth Amendment during the latest round of their pandemic witch hunts. Dr. Fauci worked so hard to save us during the emergence of COVID, and he’s being persecuted for political theatre. He is now a distinguished professor in the Global Health Institute at Georgetown University. ✍🏻 Let’s write a note or postcard to his office expressing gratitude and encouragement for his continued integrity. ✍🏽

Judge Paul Maloney has cleared the path for a trial or settlement in a civil lawsuit against now-former police officer Christopher Schurr for shooting a a Congolese refugee named Patrick Lyoya in the back of the head while he was on the ground after a traffic stop for expired license plates. (Schurr claimed self-defense.) ✍🏽 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank Judge Maloney for not allowing Schurr to escape accountability for murder. ✍🏻

Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong is holding Homeland Security in contempt for their deliberately slow response to requests for copies of data from the cellphones of ICE agents involved in Los Angeles immigration raids in 2025, hindering efforts to build a case against them. Judge Frimpong has imposed a fine of $500 a day until the ordered records have been provided. ✍🏻 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank Judge Frimpong for refusing to allow Homeland Security to thwart justice by deliberately slow-walking delivery of the records they were ordered to provide. ✍🏽
