Style Granny 13: Why Talbots Petites Is My Vintage Secret Weapon

The mall brand that isn’t

Talbots has a reputation problem. For anyone who came up in the ‘90s, the name conjures a certain image: mall anchor, conservative cuts, the kind of tasteful that shades into invisible. It’s not wrong, exactly. A lot of what they made was exactly that.

But Talbots Petites was also one of the most widely distributed petite lines in American retail for thirty-plus years, which means they made an enormous volume of clothing — and in that volume, if you know how to look, there’s a small slice that’s genuinely well-made, interesting, and cut for a body like mine.

Shopping Talbots Petites online is the GOAT

Petite sizes are scarce in most thrift and vintage stores. On a rack, you’re lucky to find two or three options. Online, it is completely different. Search “Talbots Petites 14P blazer” on eBay, Poshmark, and thredUP, and you’ll see hundreds of pieces instead of a handful. For petites, the internet isn’t just convenient — it’s having options.

The button-downs that changed how I get dressed

The category that changed how I get dressed is the Talbots Petites all-cotton button-downs. For years, button-downs were a problem: too tight across my 36DDD chest, too long in the body, sleeves that hung past my wrists. A size 16P from Talbots fits me almost perfectly — proportioned for my body with a little ease, which is how I like them. I often wear them open over a T-shirt, and the length lands exactly right.

Since then, I’ve built a collection: a black, green, and yellow mid-century equestrian print for $22; a chambray with a tiny collar ruffle; and several polka-dot shirts with contrasting stitching on the cuff buttons, lined collars, and interesting plackets, a few interesting stripes. Better cotton and more thoughtful tailoring than almost anything new at this price point. None of them cost more than $40.

The jackets have been just as good. A heavily textured dark purple tweed with cuffed sleeves. A nubby pink-and-white tweed with a trim collar, recently acquired. A blue twill zip jacket — gold snaps on the cuffs and pockets, unmistakably Ralph Lauren in its DNA — and a white denim jacket that, against all odds, actually fits: not too short, not pulling across the back. Every single one aligns with my natural waist, wrists, and hips. When could I ever say that before?

I’ve also, for the first time in years, started wearing skirts. The perfectly proportioned Talbot’s Petites black cotton A-line with silver embroidery (!!!) that looks amazing with a silver Paul Smith sweater or a black silk shirt or a black band tee. The very Palm Springs bright blue, coral red, and white-printed cotton mini skirt, with a red tee and that chambray shirt. The knee-length black cotton lace eyelet pencil skirt that smoothes so neatly over my hips, perhaps the first pencil skirt that ever actually fit.

How I search

The most useful thing I’ve figured out is how to build the search string. I stack terms in the search box rather than relying on filters alone: item type, brand, size, and fabric, all together. Something like “tweed jacket Talbots Petites 14P” or “Talbots Petites 16P boucle blazer.” The more specific the string, the less scrolling you do through things that don’t apply.I also use the filters and settings, but getting petite search results can take a little work.

Once I have the results I like, I save the searches and also the items. Then I look at each item and eliminate what I don’t want. For example, I delete synthetics, anything pilled or tired, and pieces that don’t feel right. I also check measurements against my actual sizing. I look for construction details that show whether a piece was made to last: lining, bound seams, real pockets, fabric-covered buttons. I’ve also learned, with Talbots Petites, to notice whether the label says where the item was made. Clothing made for them in Indonesia and Thailand is often more intricately constructed than pieces made in Vietnam or China.

After I’ve narrowed my selection, I usually wait. On eBay, Poshmark, or Depop, I might get a discounted offer from the seller; on ThredUp, I can see whether the price has dropped yet and estimate whether I am willing to wait or buy.

Talbots Petites shirts and tops typically run $15–40, jackets $25–60, and pants and skirts in a similar range, depending on fabric and condition. This brand is not exactly a secret — search volume for these pieces has increased, but it’s still not popular enough to make good pieces at a good price hard to find.

Check measurements against something you own and love wearing. The conservative pieces are easy to skip once you’ve trained your eye to the silhouettes that work for you.
