When I first came across @eat.haga’s viral chocolate pudding recipe, my first reaction was pure disgust. I personally cannot stand boiled eggs. But the comments were overwhelmingly positive, and if you’ve been following along, you know there’s only one way to find out if a recipe actually holds up — put it to the test with the four boys.
To be clear: I do not eat boiled eggs. Brodie does not eat boiled eggs. And our kids? Suggesting a boiled egg to our kids is a guaranteed shortcut to ear-piercing screams that can be heard from the moon. So the idea that blending four soft boiled eggs into chocolate pudding was going to create something this household would willingly eat felt less like a recipe and more like a mythical tale your Great Grandparents would tell you about “back in the day.”
But the last few weeks of taste testing have taught me one thing: try it before you write it off. Because more often than not, I have been genuinely shocked.
And this one? This one might be the most shocking of all.
Look, I’m not going to pretend I wasn’t slightly terrified making this. The soft boiled egg yolk blended with cocoa, honey, milk, and vanilla creates this thick, creamy mousse that tastes nothing like eggs and everything like chocolate. Brodie had no idea until I told her. Her reaction was not printable.
We also threw in half a scoop of chocolate whey — partly to boost the protein, but mostly because I was deeply skeptical this was going to work and figured burying the eggs under as much chocolate flavour as humanly possible was our best shot.
And here’s the bonus: this thing is actually loaded with good stuff. Eggs are a complete protein packed with choline for brain development, Vitamin D, and B12 — basically a superfood our kids would never eat willingly. Raw cocoa powder is full of antioxidants and magnesium for recovery and sleep. Honey is a far cleaner sweetener than the garbage in store bought pudding.
Ingredients:
4 soft boiled eggs (room temperature — not hot, not cold)
3 tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup honey
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 scoop chocolate whey protein (our addition — completely optional but highly recommended)
Directions:
Blend all ingredients together.
Refrigerate for two hours.
Enjoy.
That’s it. Genuinely. That is the entire recipe. It took us less time to make than it takes my kids to argue about who gets the biggest portion.
🥚 How to nail the soft boil (don’t skip this)
This is the one step that can make or break the whole recipe. Overcook the eggs and you’ll get that eggy sulphur taste sneaking through the chocolate — and the experiment is over before it begins.
Bring a pot of water to a full boil, gently lower your eggs in, and cook for exactly 7 minutes. Then immediately transfer them to cold water for 5 minutes to stop the cooking. Peel them and let them come to room temperature before blending.
That’s it. Seven minutes, ice bath, room temp. Do not wing this part.
All four boys loved it. ALL FOUR.
For context, getting a unanimous verdict in this household is roughly as likely as getting them all to sit still for 45 consecutive seconds. Our oldest, our most suspicious, most health-food-detecting taste tester, just ate it. No interrogation. No sniffing it like a detective. Just ate it.
Ashton consumed enough pudding to concern a medical professional and then immediately asked for more.
But here’s the part that really got me: Brodie and I loved it too. Two people who have never once in their adult lives voluntarily eaten a boiled egg. Rich, creamy, actually chocolatey. Not “healthy good.” Just good.
This is one of the very few unanimous results in the history of this taste test series. I cannot stress enough how much I did not see that coming.
You don’t need to tell anyone there are eggs in it. In fact, I’d strongly recommend you don’t. Some information is on a need to know basis.
