Thetford GC’s Club Championship saw the club’s best players compete for the premier title of the year. The 36-hole competition was played over two days, with the leaders going out last on the second day.
The first round saw a large number of great scores, headed by Rhys Nightingale shooting a 2 under par 70, notable for the 4 under par stretch from the 13th to 17th holes. Two shots behind on level par was young Cameron Tilley, followed by four players on 73 - Gareth Mills, Ed Diamambro, Matt Pearce and William Cooper.
The second round was a roller coaster as Nightingale played the first six holes in level par, however Tilley was 2 under par through this stretch to pull level. Through 14 holes, Nightingale and Pearce were level par for the tournament, while Tilley was two over.
At this point Pearce bogeyed 15 and a double on Thetford’s signature 16th moved him to +3. Tilley remained at +2 after 16 with Nightingale leading on level par. However, the drama escalated on the 17th. An errant drive by Nightingale cost him a lost ball and a double bogey, compounded with another double on the last. A birdie from Pearce meant Tilley was leading by one playing 18.
Tilley played out a solid par 4, as did Pearce, meaning Tilley took the title by one shot. He was presented the trophy by captain Mark Twogood with the other competitors saluting him.
The nett competition was won by Ian Harvey with a 10 under par score for the 36 holes.
HAVERHILL GC
Congratulations again go to Jack Bligh on winning the President’s Putter last Saturday with an outstanding level par gross, net 67 to win by one shot from Adrian Annis with a net 68. In third place was Paul Bartlett with a net 70.
The podium finishers were the only golfers from the field to shoot level or under par net, which showed how difficult the course was playing, and how well the top three did to play to that standard!
The men’s midweek stableford was won by Paul Tebbutt with 38 points on countback from Josh Emery in second place and Chris Powell in third.
Matches
Congratulations go to the Ladies Weston team who won against Brett Vale at Haverhill Golf Club. The result was a fantastic 4-1 win with the team made up of Mandy Williamson, Linda Alexander, Lynne Hart, Jackie Condon and Lyn Fish.
THE SUFFOLK
The Suffolk seniors played the first round of the Bob Hope, Gerald Percival and John Feltham trophies.
This multi-round event is played for in gross strokeplay for the Bob Hope, and nett scoring for the Gerald Percival under 25 handicap and John Feltham over 25 handicap.
In the gross competition, Neil Mawson’s 85 topped the leaderboard, with Rob Kennedy one shot back on 86 and Andrew Rudd returning an 89.
Mawson also topped the Gerald Percival, his nett 67 trumped Kennedy’s 69 and Rudd’s 71. These three will be the ones to watch as the rounds unfold.
In the John Feltham, Adrian Banns had the best nett score of the day. His nett 66 was one clear of Bob Hope himself, on 67. Nick Rippington was third on nett 71.
There was also a weekend of Stableford competition played. Richard Clegg took the top prize on Saturday, with a little assistance from The Count, as Alf Jackson also scored 35 points. John Pritchard was two shots back on 33 points.
On the Sunday, Mark Bryant rolled back the years, scoring 44 points. Warren Howell was second on 35, with Stephen Haygreen losing out by virtue of The Count also on the same score.
Finally at The Suffolk, the Seniors held a 4BBB Stableford. Mawson and Banns took their individual form and combined to great success to win the event.
Their 40 points was one clear of Derek Bloomfield and Roger McGann on 39, who in turn were assisted by The Count, as Rudd and John Ellis also returned 39 points.
BURY ST EDMUNDS GC
The BSE men competed for The Lavelle Cup. This is a tournament using bogey scoring, where players compete in a matchplay format versus the course - an unusual format that the players only play once a year at Bury.
David Ives was the winner of the trophy, scoring a 6up win. He used the Count’s calculations to snatch the victory from Ron Coleman who also beat the course by six. Callum Douglas was third on plus five, with Ian Coulling also scoring the same score for fourth.
Phil Tulett had an excellent round in the Mixed Medal, returning a nett 67. Denis O’Connel was awarded second place by The Count as four players scored a nett 68. Robert Marshall was third, with William Kirkham and Ian Howell missing out on the podium places but still scoring nett 68’s.
Last but by no means least there was a Greene King 9 Hole stableford. Owen Calloway took full advantage of the empty course vacated by a Junior Shotgun start, to score a twilight 22 points. Paula Tennant was second on 21 points with Michael Burns third on 20 points.
