Charge dropped against cleaner accused of sparking town riots

A charge made against a Serco cleaner, who was alleged to have sparked a series of riots in Thetford, has been dropped.

James Jobson, 62, of Highlow Road, Costessey, had been accused of misconduct in public office relating to information obtained through his employment, which was published on Facebook.

He appeared in court on Monday in connection with a series of disorder in the town over the potential housing of asylum seekers, which began on August 4.

However, yesterday, police confirmed the case was being discontinued after evidence was uncovered which undermined the case against Jobson.

It was concluded that the legal test for prosecution was no longer met and the case was discontinued.

Detectives continue to investigate how information was shared online, which led to several addresses being targeted.

Houses in St John’s Way, Bracken Road, Clover Way, Elm Road and Chester Way were all targeted by crowds on the evenings of August 4, 5 and 6.

A total of 23 people have been arrested in connection with the disorder in Thetford.

During the investigation against him, Jobson answered no comment while being interviewed under caution.
