MP slams Anglian Water over leaks as hosepipe ban continues

An MP has challenged Anglian Water over issues with leaks as the region endures a hosepipe ban.

Charlotte Cane, who represents Ely and East Cambridgeshire, has raised concerns over the levels of water being lost through the authority’s network.

Figures by the Liberal Democrats – the party Ms Cane is a part of – found Anglian Water lost 68,255 million litres of water through leaks in 2024/25, or about 187 million per day, roughly the fifth highest in the country.

With residents being asked to reduce water during a hosepipe ban, Ms Cane called on the authority to make tackling leaks a priority.

She said it was reasonable for residents to expect water companies to do everything they could to reduce water loss.

She called on the Government to replace Ofwatt with a new regulator.

Under a mutual model of ownership, she hoped for infrastructure investment, with bills directed to stop leaks and sewage dumping.

“These figures are concerning, particularly at a time when households across East Anglia are being asked to restrict their own water use,” Ms Cane added.

“I want to see Anglian Water investing consistently in its network so that leakage is reduced and our water supply is more resilient in future.”
