The latest in pseudo-intellectual hotness has come in: Helen Andrews has proclaimed society has experienced The Great Feminization and civilization is on the precipice of women-induced woke doom because women be crazy.
I’ll be frank, I have only skimmed Andrew’s post, and then read some critiques. I’ve lost patience with reheated ‘women bad’ takes. Not only that, I think its entire premise is completely undermined by the fact a woman wrote it. Apparently women as a group are too illogical be judges, so why should I trust Andrew’s judgement on The Great Feminization?
I don’t know why anyone has decided to take any of it seriously. It appears to boil down to the following:
A) Men are logical and able to handle an objective morality, and are competitive and ambitious by nature, worthy of Nietzsche.
B) Women are illogical, ambition-free, hysterical, bitchy creatures who are totally irrational and unable to think clearly about anything. They destroy hierarchies and are all mediocre at everything. They are ruining society. Go back to what you are good at ladies, which is having babies. Please have some man’s baby. Any man’s, actually. They have a right to a family, ladies! Why aren’t you having babies on demand????! You have too much freedom in this woke world!!!
C) All of this is just due to biological sex differences, which always show women are inferior, which is why they are controversial, so we should just accept it and restructure our society around this understanding that women are irrational and inferior vessels for wombs. Sorry, ladies! You’re just all irrational and inferior. It's genetic. Please forget a woman calculated the moon landing and start having babies. Your contribution is only ruining society when you aren't shooting babies out of your womb non stop.
D) As a woman, the author can clearly see this is the case, so it’s OK for her to make this argument despite the fact thousands of words of sexism disguised as cold logic and hard truths undermine her argument about women, because a woman wrote them. Oops.
There have been many essays like it and there will be many essays that repeat its claims in the future. I believe the first attested essay in the genre was probably written by Aristotle.
So it's not particularly novel sexist tripe. Unfortunately, the centrist segment of people who brand themselves as sensible realists seem to think they need to even acknowledge the essay. To say maybe she has a point. Or maybe there are differences and not acknowledging this is bad! Or something. I don’t know. Look at chimpanzees! We can see it in their behavior, despite the fact that eight million years separate us (ten seperate a cat and a lion, for reference), and this is very applicable to people, who occupy an entirely different genus to other primates. Oh, and only for the natural roles of women and men, and not the shit flinging or the picking bugs out of someone else’s fur and eating them. That's different, apparently. No, that's nothing to do with people.
Personally, I think the sex difference that matters is that men are fleshy box people with far too much hair, while women are carved monuments to humanity’s beauty, but I am also a gay woman so take that opinion with a grain of salt.
I know I certainly don’t see myself in this funhouse mirror of women. I’m competitive to a fault, frankly. But I am, as is trendy to say now, ‘gender non-conforming’. I would be the lesbian exception that proves the rule that all other women bad.
Thus, I can see how Andrews could write such an essay. She’s not a conventionally attractive woman, she’s nerdy enough to write thousands of words on How Society Is, etc. Being a bit too smart makes you an outsider in many respects, and leads to people writing things like this, because the sort of behavior she describes is also is describing the sort of girls who definitely bullied the both of us in high school. Nor is Andrews is some unique outsider woman, de novo. I believe Gertrude Stein was in the same vein, convinced she was some sort of outside exception. Not like the other girls. In fact, there’s millions of Helen Andrewses out there, convinced they are the only sensible woman in a world full of nasty bitches who pick on them. Maggie Thatcher, anyone?
All this essay is, then, is just part of a new trend on the internet, or in the patches of it that consider themselves intellectual : writing lengthy essays that frame themselves as ‘telling the truth about our modern society, because I am a rebel who sees the truth’. This mostly seems to consist of repackaging old bigotries for a modern audience: Women are irrational and mediocre, the Jews are a baby eating settler colonialist cabal who nefariously run the world, and only (white) men can save us from this and also the immigrating horde of mediocrity from the Punjab. Women supported wokeism and now everything is bad and men can’t tell it how it is, which is why this author is a rebel, even though they are repeating stereotypes Homer would have felt were boring and hackneyed.
These essays are not ‘telling it how it is’. They are simply repackaging old nastiness for a modern audience, as an explanation for the various ills that bedevil our society. Women aren’t having babies, and this is nothing to do with straight men being terrible, or the economy, but because women bad. Woman have too much independence. Women always bad. Never man fault. Men are lonely, this woman fault. The government doesn’t work any more. Probably woman fault. Woman bad. Everything woman fault.
I mean, you’re insisting women to go have babies in a society where it’s still expected of them to give a man's name to someone they spent 9 months of sacrifice making, when said man's entire contribution amounted to some sticky goo. Hah! Maybe sexism is still real, rather than us living in a gynocratic woke wonderland!
And all the world's problems cannot be caused by the fact young people are living paycheck to paycheck barely able to afford rent on a one bedroom apartment and living costs for themselves, let alone a child - all despite earning more than their parents did. It can’t be that the West has built an economy for financiers and predicated entirely on off shoring and rent extraction. Don’t forget the private equity robber barons looting profitable companies and destroying them for short term gain. To top it off, every country in the West seems to have a government of schmucks who seem completely unwilling to solve the problem, probably because the problem is making them money personally.
The economy consolidating into horrifying monopolies? Given the way we're going, soon that'll probably be women's fault, because we are biologically inclined towards communalism, of course.
This situation suits about 50 people in the world. Everyone else is getting fucked, and because of our lack of social lives, getting economically fucked is generally the only way we are getting any fucks, too. That might be why people aren’t getting married and having children. Or starting businesses. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, how do you get the capital to do anything? You don’t, and by the way, the landlord wants to raise your rent again. Market rates, you see. If you don’t like it, you can be homeless, if you like. The economy views you as a subscriber to have money extracted from, not to build any capital yourself. Subscribe to your home, subscribe to Netflix, subscribe to have your car seats heat themselves, and spend the rest of your income on DraftKings365Duel, all for the minuscule chance you might hit on a parley and have some disposable income. You will own nothing and be totally miserable.
