In 1990, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi gave a name to a state athletes and artists had been describing for decades.
He called it flow.1
Complete absorption in the moment. Self-consciousness disappears, and time dilates or vanishes entirely.
It happens when challenge and skill sit in close balance, matched tightly enough that the you and the moment become indistinguishable.
Clear goals and immediate feedback. Action and awareness merge into a single motion.
Neurology shifts. Theta increases. Beta decreases. Researchers call it “transient hypofrontality,” the brain’s self-monitoring circuits going quiet.2
Csikszentmihalyi described people becoming so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter.
This is flow as most people know it. The zone. Peak performance. Real, measured, documented.
It is also episodic.
It describes what happens during an activity.
It says nothing about who you are in the hours between those moments.
It doesn’t explain why one person meets hardship with grace and another doesn’t.
Here is the truth: grace itself is flow.
Resilience, in the face of circumstances that used to knock you down, is flow.3
Gratitude, held regardless of what your life looks like, is flow because it fuels optimism, which leads to seeing opportunities others miss.
Unconditional love for your life, just as it is, is flow because it keeps you patient, hopeful, persistent and flexible in trying times.
Appreciation of what used to trigger you is flow because what used to trip you up now empowers you.
Csikszentmihalyi measured a frequency, an episodic phenomenon. This expanded view names a way of being.
Flow is not just something you drop into anymore.
You become it.

From Frustration to Flow is where this shift gets structured into a four-week process.
You’ll work with flow, gratitude, unconditional love and other states of consciousness as trainable states, not accidents of temperament. The same intention work that produces flow during a task gets applied to who you are between tasks.
Featuring the most evolved and effective version of the Superconscious Intention Process and framework yet: From Frustration to Flow 3.0
