Ram Dass · From the Archive

This is one of my favorite prayers, Ram Dass or otherwise. The emphasis on ALL beings, regardless of whether or not those beings are human, allows us to meditate on the beings we don’t normally include in our prayers: the birds, the fish, the algae, the river, the rocks. The beings we don’t understand, or may not even believe in. Beings we’ve forgotten, beings we’ve given up on.

“All beings” includes us, but it also brings “us” into everything else. The hierarchy we take for granted levels out, and we realize, through this prayer, that we are just a small part of the whole.

Let’s just sit for a few minutes, and just let yourself feel the grace that allows us to be together. Let’s bring ourselves to a quiet place and start to focus in the center of the chest.

And now, in appreciation of what we’ve all had the shared grace of receiving, let’s just imagine in circles around this room, as far as the mind can imagine, all beings everywhere. All beings of the present. All beings of the past. All beings of the future. All beings on this plane and on other planes.

And I’ll say four phrases. And if you feel comfortable, you may repeat them afterwards. Each one.

As you do this, from the heart, send out what you’re saying to touch all beings everywhere.

May all beings be free of suffering.

May all beings be peaceful.

May all beings be happy.

May all beings be free.
