The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has been accused of damaging scientific integrity after retracting a paper which suggested that Covid vaccines may have been to blame for some excess deaths during the pandemic.
In 2024, a group in the Netherlands published a paper in BMJ Public Health, warning that some pandemic deaths may have been caused by the indirect effects of containment measures and vaccination programmes, and calling for further investigation.
The work was peer reviewed for nine months, and accepted as accurate by the BMJ, the UK’s leading medical journal. However, it was retracted this week after a slew of complaints and an investigation by the Princess Máxima Centre in Utrecht, where three of the four authors worked.
The investigation found no evidence of malicious intent, fabrication or falsification of data, but still labelled the work as misleading and selective because it “did not reflect scientific consensus”, and had disproportionately focused on the negative effects of vaccination.
Dr Saskia Mostert, the first author, has since resigned from the Princess Máxima Centre, and said she had been unprepared for the “irrational and blind fury” that met publication.
The BMJ said it was retracting the article because of “misinformation in the discussion regarding the possible causes of excess mortality and because the limited nature of the original work by the authors was not sufficiently described”.
But three experts from the Netherlands have written to the BMJ editorial board and have said they are shocked by the retraction and asked them to reconsider their decision.
“Retraction is disproportional and raises serious questions about the extent to which political considerations played a part in your decision,” they wrote.
“A retraction like this not only damages the integrity of the available published science, but it also sets a terrible precedent in these times of increasing political pressure on scientists.”
Ronald Meester, professor of probability theory at Vrije University in Amsterdam, who was one of the authors of the letter, told The Telegraph that there was “no scientific reason to retract”.
“I think that BMJ might have been pressured, but not clear by whom,” he said.
“As we wrote in our letter, retraction is bizarre in this case, there is nothing actually wrong with the paper.
“Hence the real reason must be political. Very sad, really, for science. I do not see how we can take science seriously anymore when editors are willing to make decisions for these kinds of reasons.”

Medical research is captured by the pharmaceutical industry. Medical education is how that captured research gets transmitted to doctors—and the influence doesn’t stop at the medical journals. It extends into every aspect of how doctors are trained, from their first day of medical school all the way through the continuing education they are required to complete throughout their careers.
This doesn’t mean that every doctor is corrupt, but it does mean that the institutions responsible for training doctors are overwhelmingly influenced by the pharmaceutical industry—and that influence shapes what doctors are taught, what information they are exposed to, and what treatments they are encouraged to use.
Medical school is subject to pharmaceutical industry influence at every level. It begins with the accreditation bodies that decide what medical schools are required to teach, and extends to the administrators who set institutional priorities, the faculty who deliver the curriculum, the content that is included or excluded, and even the informal culture that shapes what students absorb outside formal instruction.
This capture wasn’t inevitable. Before it could happen, medical education had to be centralized.
That centralization largely began in 1910 with the Flexner Report. Funded by the Carnegie Foundation and supported by the Rockefeller Institute, it led to a sweeping reform of American medical education. Medical schools that did not conform to a single standardized model of medicine were closed or forced to adapt. Within two decades, roughly half of all medical schools in the United States had shut down.
When medical education was spread across hundreds of competing schools with competing approaches to medicine, no single set of institutions could define what doctors learned. Once the system was narrowed, influencing a small number of institutions was enough to shape it.

Large-scale investors drive the medical industry through private equity firms, venture capital, sovereign wealth funds, and asset managers who shape how care is delivered and what medical “treatments” will be developed and forwarded.
Commercial business defines and shapes hospital systems, medical schools, and continuing education platforms. The knowledge future doctors acquire is shaped to match investor financial and operational goals- profit is the one and only goal.
Because residents complete their entire training within these highly structured digital systems designed by big business they never learn how to practice medicine outside of these for-profit automated clinical pathways. The corporate software dictates what questions will be asked and what tests will be ordered, training new doctors to equate “good medicine” with corporate compliance.

Here’s why blind trust in your doctor is a BAD idea! We’re told it’s wise, but really, it’s obedience.
Doctors aren’t trained on human health and how to support it. They only recognize disease, going so far as to invent “pre-diseases,” like pre-diabetes, so that even healthy people are labeled sick.
They’re trained to use symptom checklists and lab panels to put you in a diagnostic category. Then a computer algorithm spits out drugs and other “treatments” according to an industry sponsored clinical practice guideline. That’s it.
They’re trained to “trust the science”, but haven’t even read it. Doctors don’t even know how to read a scientific paper with critical appraisal. In my medical school class, the students were so intimidated by basic bio-statistics that a cheating scandal occurred. They’re fed a list of industry curated headlines which are more marketing than science.
