It’s already mid-August (ish) and even though I’m in disbelief that summer is coming to a close, it’s happening whether or not I’m ready for it. Even though the summer still feels like it is in full swing, this is the time of year that I start shifting my thinking toward fall (how can I not when Halloween decorations are being rolled out). If your next trip is booked for September or October (like mine is), count yourself lucky. In my opinion, it’s one of the best times to travel: the summer crowds have thinned out and prices tend to follow. But while the weather can be glorious, it can also be genuinely tricky to pack for.
The instinct is to treat shoulder season like two trips squeezed into one suitcase: a sundress in case it’s warm, a sweater in case it’s cold, a jacket and boots just in case it gets chilly, plus shorts and sandals just in case it’s hot. The first problem is there are way too many ‘just in case’ pieces. The second problem is that by the time the suitcase is zipped, you’re hauling two different wardrobes. And this will make it harder to get dressed while you’re traveling as these pieces don’t often play well together.
