Today’s a special day for me, bittersweet, it’s a completion of a big cycle in the year—the time after Pentecost, beginning with that week where you have the ember days of spring, and then the great relaxing of all those Sundays after Pentecost, stretching out in early summer and reaching right over the Fourth of July, and then until now, today, July 9, the feast of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu—and I hear those cool lapping waters on those volcanic islands, and I know that yes this is a cycle—and immediately after this day, the summer tilt is made, and the following Sundays after Pentecost wend towards Advent, and the new liturgical year, and the other half of life and living—and when this day comes, I know that my beloved feast day of St Anthony is already a month into the past, and the magical month of May, mystic in its beauty, is also gone by many weeks, and it is time to start thinking of September and the autumn barrel and the harvest and the gold
