Women beat Mizzou 1-0 after VAR results in PK converted by Jeanette Fieldsend

VAR was SLU’s friend on challenges made and not made Thursday afternoon at Mizzou.

The Billikens scored the only goal after a review requested by coach Katie Shields and held on for the 1-0 win over the Tigers, who might have let a goal get away.

Mizzou appeared to score the tying goal in the first half, but it was wiped out by an offside call that Tigers coach Stefanie Golan chose not to challenge. SLU also came out on the right side of a review in the 89th minute to improve to 2-1-0 while starting a stretch of four straight road games.

SLU’s Hope Kim was tripped a couple of steps inside the box in the 17th minute with no call made. Shields immediate called for a review and a penalty kick was awarded.

Jeanette Fieldsend made the PK, making her 2-for-2 on the season after she scored the team’s only goal in the opener against Alabama.

Mizzou had a program record crowd of 2,324.

The Mizzou goal that was nullified would have created an interesting VAR decision. This season coaches are given two chances to challenge a call, but the Tigers did not use any.

The referee did opt to review a play late in the game, but no infraction against SLU was found. The Tigers did have a good opportunity on a sharp shot by Alyssa Bryant in the 89th minute, but SLU goalkeeper Emma Parker made one of her three saves.

The Billikens outshot the Tigers 9-4 overall and 8-3 on goal. They had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
