Sonic the Hedgehog has a large library full of incredible games. From the very first SEGA Genesis game, fans have had some amazing experiences from Team Sonic. Would you be surprised to learn that some games never got released?

It is true! Team Sonic and collaborating developers have pitched several games featuring the Blue Blur and his friends that never got made. Some even entered early production before having the plug pulled. I do not know about you, but I would love to play them.

Here are my top 5 unreleased Sonic the Hedgehog video games fans would love to play:

Sister Sonic

Yes, I know that’s Sonia from Sonic Underground

Sega collaborated with Nihon Falcom to create a remake of Popful Mail, but with Sonic characters. The protagonist would have been Sonic’s previously unknown sister. Fans of Popful Mail put on a massive mail campaign to stop the remake, prompting Nihon Falcom to cease production in 1993.

Sonic-16

Bring back the Freedom Fighters, SEGA!

With the success of DiC Entertainment’s cartoon series Sonic The Hedgehog, known to fans as Sonic SatAM, SEGA considered making a side-scroller set in the universe. It would have featured Princess Sally, Bunny Rabbot, Rotor the Walrus, Antoine D’Coolette, and, of course, Tails the Fox. Unfortunately, Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka disliked the designs and ended production in 1995.

Sonic X-Treme

Real thing

Perhaps the most famous entry on this list, this one would have predated Sonic Adventure as the first 3D game for the SEGA Saturn. Unfortunately, Team Sonic sabotaged it in 1996, leaving the Saturn with no Sonic game. Some blame this incident for why the Saturn failed. Elements from it would be used for the 2013 Sonic game The Lost World.

Sonic Adventure 3

Sonic Adventure DX

Proposed with the initial success of the Dreamcast, hopes for this game would end in 2001 when SEGA bowed out of the console wars, ending future Dreamcast game releases. It would be retooled into Sonic Unleashed.

Sonic Mania 2

SEGA had collaborated with the game developers who would form Evening Star Studios for the first Sonic Mania. SEGA chose not to make a sequel in 2018, prompting Evening Star to move on to other games.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments below. Tell me if there is a comic book, movie, anime, or novel you would like me to review.
