ACIP and its vaccine recommendations made since 2025 are on hold through a court order. States are responsible for vaccine recommendations prior to school enrollment. They are also responsible for making exemptions to obtaining vaccines. Vaccines are continued to be covered by insurance.
President Trump is apparently not happy with the current vaccine landscape in the U.S. Along with Secretary Kennedy, he signed an executive order that reads like a wish list of anti-scientific recommendations. Thank goodness that this order cannot be implemented through his whims (as of yet).
Here are my some of my favorite parts of the Executive Order:
DELIVERING GOLD-STANDARD CHILDHOOD VACCINE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AMERICANS- If you see “Gold Standard Science”, you know that it will be a stand in for made up science.
The United States currently recommends more childhood vaccines than any peer nation, including more than twice as many vaccine doses as some European nations (scientific assessment).- Poor Denmark. Not only does it have to worry about Greenland, but it also used to bolster anti-vaccine ideology.
In the United States, by contrast, individual States set mandatory vaccination requirements that children must meet to attend school.- That’s right! Then what is the point of this executive order?
(a) offer options to administer core childhood vaccines, starting with MMR, as single vaccines rather than combination products/doses, including by working with the private sector and other countries as appropriate, while guaranteeing continued availability of combination vaccines and those vaccines recommended for shared clinical decision-making;- Drs. Trump and Kennedy have determined that you should not use combination vaccines because why? MMR, for example, has been used for decades. Why don’t they focus on the fact that we have currently surging measles cases in the U.S. due to a decrease in vaccination rates?
(b) assess the ideal timing and sequencing of all core childhood vaccines and adjust the Federal childhood and adolescent vaccine schedule as appropriate based on gold-standard science;- Dr. Trump is especially worried about this. He thinks that getting too many vaccines at once causes autism. You should follow the rule to ignore any recommendations made after saying “Gold Standard Science”.
(a) The Attorney General shall take appropriate measures to further meritorious legal actions challenging State laws that conflict with States’ constitutional and Federal statutory obligations related to parental authority, religious freedom, disability accommodations, and equal protection under the law, including, to the extent applicable under Federal law, States’ obligations to provide religious and medical exemptions from childhood and adolescent immunization requirements.- What is a Trump administration policy if it doesn’t involve politically motivated actions by the Department of Justice (DOJ)? Let’s hope that the DOJ doesn’t follow through with this.
