The Relationship Has to Grow Too

Lately, I’ve noticed something with my oldest son.

It’s subtle.

He’s beginning to want more independence.

He wants to make more decisions.

Solve more problems.

Own more of his world.

Part of me loves it.

And then part of me grieves it.

Not because something is wrong.

Because something is changing.

And I’m realizing that if our relationship is going to continue to grow...

...mine has to change too.

It would be easier to keep relating to him as the little boy he was.

But that wouldn’t be fair to who he’s becoming.

Every season asks something different of us.

Less control.

More trust.

Less instruction.

More conversation.

And the relationship has to grow too.

The more I think about it, the more I see this everywhere.

A first-year employee and a ten-year veteran don’t need the same leader.

A freshman athlete and a senior don’t need the same coach.

Even our mentors change.

I don’t think we outgrow them.

But we do outgrow the relationship we once had.

The questions become different.

The conversations deepen.

Dependence becomes partnership.

That’s not distance.

That’s growth.

I wonder if one of the easiest mistakes to make is freezing people in time.

We keep talking to them...

...as if they’re still the version of themselves we first met.

But people change.

Hopefully, they grow.

Which means every meaningful relationship eventually requires a reset.

Not because it was broken.

Because the people inside it aren’t the same anymore.

Think about the people closest to you.

Your spouse.

Your children.

A colleague.

A mentor.

A friend.

Ask yourself:

Am I responding to who they are today...

...or to who they used to be?

Sometimes the greatest act of love isn’t knowing someone well.

It’s noticing they’ve changed.

The healthiest relationships aren’t the ones that stay the same.

They’re the ones where both people keep growing -

and keep making room for the other person’s growth too.
