A problem is presented; discussion ensues. Everyone pitches in. Randomness increases.
An ex-consultant, now turned corporate strategist is in the room. The madness seems baffling.
He steps in and says, “Hey everyone, I think we need to think about this problem in 3 parts, Part 1 - blah, Part 2 - blah and Part 3 - blah.” Everyone agrees, the discussion becomes more structured and we move towards sanity.
Everything about the above seems reasonable but I have a counter opinion.
Sometimes you need to let the chaos be!
Often, we jump to find structure, to find sense, to find sanity but we work and live in complex systems. In our attempt to structure every problem too early, we miss the richness and chaos that is required for the discussion to have any chance of solving the problem meaningfully. We stifle creative thinking, leading to mundane problem solving and standard answers.
In case you find yourself in the middle of such discussions, let the chaos be!!! Maybe for 1 or 2 meetings. Do not jump in early to take control.
Chaos can be beautiful.
