On December 7, 2024, the museum hosted its final GANA (Hear, Think, Understand) event of the year. Over 70 attendees gathered to hear Howard Guille, Colin Battersby, and Pekeri Ruska discuss the topic of economic, community, and social change on Minjerribah. This engaging presentation provided an in-depth look at how the island's unique geography, history, and community dynamics are evolving.
In 2018, the museum published Figuring Minjerribah, an analysis based on census data up to 2016. Building on this, Howard Guille incorporated 2021 Census data and additional sources to explore the significant demographic, economic, and social changes shaping Minjerribah today.
Key insights included:
Shifts in Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations.
Economic inequalities and gentrification.
The rise of holiday homes and short-term rentals.
Socio-economic distinctions between townships like Goompi, Pulan, and Mooloomba.
These findings offer a foundation for community dialogue on managing tourism, gentrification, and the visitor economy.
