"We now have so many stories that we can no longer keep them in our heads. We are concerned they will be lost or forgotten. How do we save them and the new stories we collect?"

The soot had streaked her hand, she saw. As it must have streaked the hands of countless women before her, who too had placed their diyas in that little alcove.

“Dear me! There goes that Kujo Buri. Buri, I’m going to eat you.”

Just then the babblers set up a huge commotion. “They’re back, they’re back, they’re back!” they shouted all together. And sure enough, there they were, the whole flock, hurtling through the wind and rain to the old mango tree.

“Goodbye, goodbye,” called the sparrows and off they flew.

One day in her distress, she took an egg, wrapped it in cotton cloth, and put it carefully in a corner of her hut. Every day she went to look at the egg, until one morning she found that the egg had hatched, and in its shell sat a tiny baby boy.
