As you possibly know, I love to set up small homes in different cities for slightly longer periods of time. To live there as a local rather than a tourist, and create an everyday life, waking up early, working, and exploring as much as I can. And I love having good books - preferably classics that are somehow connected to the city I am in - accompany me on my adventures.
People who know that I also love to travel light with only carry-on luggage sometimes ask me how I manage to bring books with me. As soon as I mention audiobooks, the response is almost always: “Oh, but I prefer real books.”
Believe me, so do I. Ever since I can remember, I have loved books more than almost anything. And to me the written word is practically sacred.
Some of my happiest childhood memories are connected to books. From when I taught myself to read while still in preschool so I could unearth the mysteries of books, to when a friend of my mother’s gave me a bookshelf on which I could display my small personal library, to saving up my own money to go and buy one of my favourites: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
So when I tell people that I love audiobooks, I don’t mean as a replacement for physical books. My point is something else entirely, because for me, audiobooks are a different way of inhabiting stories.
