Nicole Rivera · Stop Writing Alone

Hello Writer!

This month we have a bunch of Write-ins (scheduled “butt in chair” time with fellow writers cheering you on!), Story Club (lessons learned from the storytellers before us), a Writing Prompt Party (basically a writing improv session — come with your “yes… and…” attitude), and our monthly Open Mic. Here’s a little bit more of what you can expect from each, followed byt eh dates, times, and links you need to take advantage of them all!

  • Write-ins: Live Zoom calls where we set timers to stay focused on our writing in between chats that range from casual talk about the varying weather outside the writing rooms of our participants to the serious conversations where we troubleshoot our passion projects with fellow writers. This month there are Write-ins on two Tuesdays (FREE!), all Wednesdays, and two Fridays — check the schedule to see which ones you can make it to!

  • Story Club: Live Zoom book club for writers. Each month we discuss the reading of 27 Essential Principles of Story by Daniel Joshua Rubin and the story of the month. This July we will ) be discussing Lesson 4 in the Rubin book which focused on a lesson learned from South Park.

  • Writing Prompt Party: Live Zoom Call where a writing prompt is shared and a timer is set. Participants are challenged to write the draft of a short story based on the prompt. When the timer ends, we then read our drafts aloud to each other.

  • OPEN MIC: Our monthly Open Mic has been transforming into a fun feedback session for the regulars who have been attending. Rather than simply read aloud for applause of fellow attendees, we started reading for feedback. Come join us and decide which is right for you, all is welcome as we write together, learn together, and grow together this month!

If you are a paid subscriber and have access to the Stop Writing Alone Google Calendar (paid subscribers can Direct Message me with the email address they want to connect to the calendar), I’ve been populating the calendar from the road.

Here’s what we have coming up this August:

Here is a pdf copy of this month’s Google calendar schedule of events in case you want to print it:

This month there are EIGHT MEETINGS open to all writers:

  • The 2Hour Type & Talk Write-in at 10:00am (Eastern time) on

    • Tuesday, August 11th

    • Tuesday, August 18th

  • The August Writing Prompt Party being held on Thursday, August 13th at 6pm Eastern

These are great meetings to join to get a taste of what its like to be a part of an online writing community. One is designed to inspire you to create something new in a fun, judgement-free space (WRITING PROMPT PARTY!), and the other gives you a chance to commiserate with other writers while also devoting some time to your current work in progress (TYPE & TALK TUESDAYS!)!

I’m hoping once you join us and see how valuable these experiences are for yourself, you will understand why joining the paid subscription is worth your while.

If you are not yet a paid subscriber, the investment is either $15/month, or $150/year (that gives you two months for free!). Here are some of the reasons why I think you should make this investment today:

With a VIP membership, you can:

  • have the conversations surrounding your writing life with people who understand your struggles and are ready to celebrate your successes (in other words: grow your circle of WRITER friends!)

  • stretch your writing muscles with fun, non-judgemental writing exercises designed to help you find new ways into your fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction (translation:write more cool stuff!)

  • engage in book clubs designed with writers in mind through our Story Club and Practicing Poets club,

  • design new ways to find accountability for your writing practice based on your current needs (get to WORK ON YOUR WRITING!)

  • Access to a Google Calendar with all the events and Zoom links included

So what are you waiting for?

Nicole Rivera is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
