Don't worry darling...it's just a quarry!

Ok, so we are as surprised as you are. Neighbours came by, asking if they had heard about the new Mega Quarry.

Let's be clear. It isn't the same as before. It's smaller and only on some of the lands of the previous Mega Quarry. However, when Strada made its last application in 2017, the community was told, don't worry, it's not below the water table. Don't worry it's not a Mega Quarry.

Well, they are back. And now they say, don't worry, it's below the water table, but we will listen to the science. The only problem with that is that science is never absolute. Even complicated environmental impact assessments often don't look at cumulative effects, and truthfully —>

But aren't they going to monitor our wells?! Well, while they’re still in business and if you want to take their word for it.

But the real question for us is far more fundamental. If something does go wrong, what happens then?

According to one Strada representative from a community meeting, they will bring us drinking water. Yep, you heard us right.

Oh dear.

They said a lot in that community meeting.

They also said that Ontario has some of the most rigorous standards for regulation for Quarrys. Only that's not true either.

According to the Auditor General Report, IT'S THE EXACT OPPOSITE of true.

Under staffed. Lack of technical skills. Fewer checks than ever. Almost no repercussions for companies that don't comply. Yet Strada told us, don't worry, the government's got your back.

That feels hopeful. Well, this community was also hopeful that Strada wasn’t going to turn their pit into a Quarry or that they wouldn't ever go BELOW THE WATER TABLE.
