Success Is a Test

Everyone prepares for failure. The Stoics spent just as much time preparing for success.

That sounds backwards until you watch what winning does to people. The title becomes an identity. The praise becomes a need. The win arrives, and quietly starts owning its owner.

Marcus Aurelius, the most powerful man alive, kept a rule for this. Take without pride. Let go without struggle.

The Stoics were not against good things. They were against being owned by them. Enjoy what comes. Use it fully.

But run the check now and then. Imagine it gone tomorrow. The title, the money, the applause. If losing it would break you, you no longer own it. It owns you.

Seneca’s reminder helps here. Everything you have is on loan from fortune. And fortune doesn’t announce when the loan comes due.

Enjoy the win. Make sure you can walk away if it becomes necessary.
