This morning, Mary and I went to Hopewell United Methodist Church in Murrayville, Georgia.
We were there for Mary to deliver a sermon in place of their pastor who was on vacation with his family. While we there, this gravesite caught our eyes.
This is the final resting place of Marine Corps Private Robert G. Elrod of Gainesville, Georgia. According to Find a Grave, Private Elrod died in 1918 of influenza while stationed in Quantico, Virginia. His epitaph stated that he "gave his life that others might enjoy the blessings of liberty throughout the world."
Our brief visit to Private Elrod’s gravesite reminded Mary and I of why we as Americans should observe Memorial Day. It’s not about a day off from work, the “start of summer”, or going to the beach or other vacation spot. It’s about those Americans who served our country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Today, it seems that we have become so polarized along partisan lines. Regardless of your political leanings, please take the time to reflect on the sacrifices our men and women in uniform made over the last 250 years. Because of their sacrifices, we live in a nation where we have the freedoms of speech, press, religion, etc., and the ability to travel freely throughout our nation.
Let us honor their memory by coming together as Americans and working to make our nation a place where all people may enjoy the blessings of liberty and prosperity. By doing so, we can assure for ourselves and our posterity that “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
