The Orioles came home riding high. They scored 26 runs in taking three of four on the road against Tampa Bay. What that series began the Rays had won nine in a row, were a season-best 28 games over the .500 mark and were 41-18 at home.
Yet the O’s came close to completing a four-game sweep last Monday.
They returned to Baltimore this week and were promptly swept three in a row by the Yankees.
It was a miserable series for the Orioles where they went just 14-for-96 (.146) at-bat and were 0-for-16 batting with runners in scoring positon. In the series at the Trop they went 11-for-33 with RISP.
Now Baltimore (61-67) begins play tonight two games back for the third AL wild card spot but they trail five teams for that spot.
The Orioles have lost four in a row and are 5-9 their past 14 games.
Tampa Bay’s win streak ended in that series against the Orioles and they just lost two of three against Toronto.
So while the Rays are still in first place and have the AL’s best record at 76-51, and third-best mark in MLB, they are 2-5 the last seven games, allowing 47 runs. They gave up 26 runs in four games to the Orioles and 21 in three versus the Blue Jays.
The Orioles are 6-4 this year against Tampa Bay and 30-19 since 2023.
Since the start of 2022, the O's are 21-11 (.656) against Tampa Bay at Camden Yards. From 2018-21, Baltimore went 14-23 (.378) against the Rays at home. The Orioles have won four straight home games against the Rays since the final home date of 2025. And the Birds have not won five consecutive games at Oriole Park since Aug. 28, 2019-Aug. 2, 2020.
Pete Alonso has hit safely in a career-high 12 straight games since Aug. 8, tied for the longest active streak in the majors. During the run he is batting .478/.547/.913/1.460 (22-for-46) with two doubles, six homers, 10 runs, 11 RBIs, and six walks. During that time, he's leading the majors in on-base percentage, slugging, OPS, hits, home runs, and total bases (42) while ranking second in batting average. The current hitting streak is the longest by an Oriole since Jeremiah Jackson hit safely in 13 consecutive games from Aug. 21-Sept. 2, 2025.
Alonso is one homer away from becoming the fifth player in MLB history to hit 30 homers in at least seven of his first eight seasons, joining Albert Pujols (all eight), Ralph Kiner, Eddie Mathews and Mark Teixeira.
Gunnar Henderson has a career .600 slugging percentage against the Rays, the fifth-highest mark all-time against Tampa Bay (min. 200 PAs) behind Mike Trout (.657), Manny Ramirez (.612), Jose Cruz Jr. (.610) and Carlos Delgado (.603).
