Proverbs: God’s Wisdom for Daily Living

Devotional Scripture

Proverbs 23:19–21 (KJV)

19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Proverbs 23:19–21 (AMP)

19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your mind in the way [of the Lord].
20 Do not associate with winebibbers; be not among them nor among gluttonous eaters of meat;
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Thought for the Day

Solomon’s counsel begins with a simple but profound instruction: “Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.” Before warning us about excess, Scripture reminds us that wisdom begins with the direction of our hearts.

God has given us many good things to enjoy, but even good things can become harmful when they control us. Food, drink, entertainment, possessions, and other pleasures can gradually become distractions when they take the place that belongs to God.

The warning against drunkenness and gluttony is therefore not merely about what we consume. It is about self-control and the condition of our hearts. When our desires become masters rather than servants, they can affect our health, relationships, finances, responsibilities, and spiritual lives.

The Apostle Paul teaches that the fruit of the Spirit includes “temperance,” or self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). This does not mean that we must live without joy or gratitude. Rather, it means learning to enjoy God’s blessings without allowing those blessings to govern us.

The Lord does not ask us to overcome every weakness through our own strength. Through Jesus Christ, we can repent, change direction, and receive strength to become better than we were before. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13).

Therefore, the answer to destructive habits is not simply to turn away from what is wrong. We should also turn toward the Lord. Proverbs tell us to guide our hearts in His way. As we seek Him, He can help us develop wisdom, discipline, balance, and greater mastery over our appetites and desires.

Our goal should not be perfection in a single day. It should be faithful progress—one wise choice at a time.

Life Application

Today, let us prayerfully consider whether anything in our lives has begun to control us rather than serve us.

Let us ask:

  • Am I practicing moderation in the things I enjoy?

  • Are my habits strengthening or weakening my ability to serve God and others?

  • Is there something I need to place more fully in the Lord’s hands?

  • What one wise choice can I make today that will bring greater balance into my life?

God’s wisdom does not merely tell us what to avoid. It teaches us where to go. We are to guide our hearts toward Him.

Prayer Devotional for the Day

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the many blessings You have placed in our lives and for the good things You have provided for us to enjoy. Help us receive these blessings with gratitude while exercising wisdom, moderation, and self-control.

When our desires become stronger than our judgment, strengthen us through Jesus Christ. Help us recognize habits that may be harming our bodies, relationships, responsibilities, or spiritual lives. Give us courage to change, humility to repent, and faith to continue moving forward.

Guide our hearts in Your way. Help us choose those things that bring us closer to You and give us strength to resist those things that may lead us away from You.

May our bodies, minds, and spirits be instruments through which we honor You and serve others.

We ask this humbly in the sacred name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
