Sequels always seemed anathema to Madonna, an artist whose dedication to forward motion finally pushed her outside the mainstream sometime after the release of Confessions on a Dancefloor in 2005. It’s not that she became too adventurous for the pop charts. Rather, her finger simply slipped off the pulse of the zeitgeist, leaving her adrift right at the moment that pop music grew amorphous.

Pop music isn’t much of a consideration on Confessions II. Strung together as a megamix, the album erases distinctions between songs with the same ease it blurs the signifiers of classic disco, house and techno.
