Hi everyone,

A couple weeks back, in When the Answer Was No, we reflected on the paths we almost abandoned. This feels like the other half of that story — what happens when we don’t.

Point four percent.

That’s the chance the analysts gave the New York Knicks a few weeks back in their 53-year quest to win the NBA championships.

Down twenty. Nine minutes left. The Garden going quiet. The betting models, the pundits, the cold math all agreed it was over.

And then it wasn’t.

When New York’s mayor stood before the city to mark the win, he didn’t credit luck.

He pointed to the sliver. “It is in that .4% that we go to work,” he said — and then named them, one by one.

The Knicks, he said, let themselves picture the worst — and then went out and did something about it.

That’s resilience, isn’t it? Not the absence of long odds. The willingness to go to work inside them.

A few hundred miles west, in a Chicago park that same week, Michelle Obama was naming the same truth in a quieter way.

She called it the steady work of change — the slow, unglamorous climb, one step repeated, day after day, generation after generation. Not a single heroic leap. A choice, made again and again.

And she reminded the crowd what actually lasts.

Not the awards or the names on buildings, but the difference we make in one another’s lives. Really seeing one another. Showing up. Carrying each other when the climb gets hard.

Different stages. Different stakes. One thread.

The long shot and the long haul.

Resilience lives in both.

Ahhh 😌

Where in your life are you standing in the .4% — or something that feels like it —
and what might it look like to rise to the challenge?

Tell us in the comments — we’d love to know.
