The storm had drummed a deep and dreary beat,
The fence stood rusted, trembling in the rain;
Then something shifted underneath our feet,
A heavy tremor rattling the window pane.
The earth began to buckle, crack, and groan,
As iron posts were shivering in the ground;
And something vast was forcing its way through,
Unleashing horrors best left still bound.
The fence, once thought a wall of iron might,
Was swept aside as if it were a reed;
A monument to man’s pathetic sight,
Now crushed beneath a god of glutton greed.
It stepped into the rain, a mountain made
Of living sinew, bone, and ancient hate;
The very atmosphere began to fade
Before the presence of this crushing fate.
It advanced upon us with a heavy tread,
And claimed our park with an earth-defying roar;
A sound to wake the spirits of the dead,
And leave the soul to rot upon the floor.
The glass was nothing, just a breath of air,
Before those jaws that parted like the night;
To witness such a demon standing there
Is to abandon hope—and lose all light.
The power is not merely in the tooth,
Or in the tail that shatters steel and stone;
It is the sudden, terrifying truth
That we are small, and we are not alone.
For when that titan bellows to the sky,
The laws of science wither, break, and bend;
And under that cold, unrepentant eye,
A human story finds a sudden end.
