Luigi Mangione’s Guilty Plea—and What Comes Next

Luigi Mangione has pled guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with his killing of healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, setting up a fight over whether New York can still prosecute him for murder.

On a new episode of the Insider podcast, Preet Bharara and Joyce Vance break down the double jeopardy questions raised by Mangione’s plea, the complications of bringing both federal and state charges, and why they are troubled by some of the public reaction to Thompson's killing.

Joyce says Mangione’s lawyers appear to be trying to use the federal plea to block the state prosecution: “They anticipated that they could use the double jeopardy argument as a bar to the state prosecution…As a practical matter, the state prosecution may end up being dismissed, or the judge may end up saying that it can’t happen.”

Meanwhile, Preet says some of the broader response—that criticism of the health care industry justifies murder—is disturbing: “It is difficult, it seems, for more people than ever to hold two things to be true in their mind at the same time.”
