A NOTE FROM THE PRODUCER

Claudia Hernández is a Producer for the Stay Tuned and Insider podcasts.

As President Trump’s popularity has declined, Democratic socialists have gained prominence. Are voters looking for significant change? And what could that mean for the midterm elections?

This week on the Stay Tuned podcast, David Axelrod, a former Obama advisor, CNN commentator, and co-host of the Hacks on Tap podcast, joins Preet Bharara to make sense of the current political landscape.

Axelrod explains: “There is a real sense of disaffection and outrage among younger voters about a system that they feel is corrupt, that is rigged against them, that is rigged against values that they believe in. In some ways, saying, ‘I’m a socialist,’ is an expression of discontent with a system that has, in their views, run into the rocks.”

Despite approval ratings lower than ever, Preet and Axelrod discuss why we might not be able to count Trump out of a political comeback just yet.

Axelrod: “He’s had these peaks and troughs, but one thing that has served him well in all this time is even though he is in some ways the biggest bullsh*t artist who ever lived, he is also utterly authentic in some ways…he really doesn’t give a sh*t about the struggles of everyday people…he is basically right now pursuing the money and pursuing what he thinks is the monumentalizing of his legacy through all of these building projects and so on…and you know what this is saying to people out there? It’s saying he’s working on everything but the things that I elected him to work on.”
