On Friday my Twitter account was in the hands of @allaboutmaye76 going by the name of TIMELESS. It says the Manager is: anna@mayemusk.com. A former student of mine discovered this and notified Twitter and me. If you go into the account, it is filled with Elon Musk love and then a bunch of my old post under TIMELESS name.

I have also discovered there are several other fake Maya Musk accounts. God knows why someone would want to set up an account under a woman who grew up in apartheid South Africa and is the son of a trillionaire but so be it.

Almost all the posts on this account are all my postings on Twitter for the last 10 years. At the moment there is no such account on Twitter under my former account @JohnDediePolSci.

Hmm...this page doesn’t exist. Try searching for something else.

In follow up emails to access-support@x.com it has been impossible to get a human response or any response. One AI email last Tuesday told me to wait a week.

There is no phone customer service to solve this. All communication is by email and AI.

On Thursday I received this message from Twitter: The email address on your account @JohnDediePolSci has been changed to bigsammy60041@gmail.com. I reported the account to google for fraud.

After filing another complaint with X, I received this response: We’ve received your request. We typically respond within a few days, but some cases can take a little longer.

Here is something funny about all this. About 15 years ago I asked my financial planner to get me into stocks related to marijuana because I saw that it’s the future. I made some money and got out before everyone was doing it. About five years ago I contacted him again and said get me into any stocks related to AI. I’m making money but boy I would take a little less money instead of having all this aggravation from Elon Musk and company!

Last week when I talked to my financial planner, I discussed this and asked him if there are companies out there to invest in related to cybersecurity but also related to the possibility of dealing with AI and cybersecurity. While I have investments in cybersecurity companies there is no company out there, yet who is doing AI cybersecurity to make sure that AI doesn’t hack into a bank or financial institution and drain it dry. I just keep thinking about the movie War Games where a computer almost starts a global nuclear war. The movie spooked President Reagan, and he asked defense officials if this was possible. A week later the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told him the problem is much worse than you think.

People think AI is cool because they can speak on their phone and ask any question and get an answer. My concern about AI is that rogue computers or nations drain your bank account or financial investment one day and there’s nothing you can do about it. Not draining it by hacking you but draining your bank or financial institution. Think about that.

The reason a lot of people really oppose data centers is because of the jobs that AI may take that they currently have along with the harm AI can do. As a college professor I must deal with AI in the classroom and over the last two to three years I’ve changed a lot of assignments to do what I can in my battle with AI. I require students to watch videos and respond to things in the video. When AI can start to do some of this stuff for students, I’m retired and on the beach!

A lot of people talk about the academic community of embracing AI, having students do assignments related to AI in their research. At this moment, to me giving students assignments where they are encouraged to use AI it’s like giving a loaded gun to a 5-year-old. Making libraries obsolete is not a good idea.

But here’s one other thing that has happened because of all this. I’ve been off Twitter for 10 days and I’ve survived. I miss posting on things, but my world hasn’t ended. I survived before I got on Twitter and right now, I’m surviving just fine without it. Would I would I like to get back on Twitter? I’d like my account back, but I don’t know if I want to set up a new account yet. Right now, I’ve enjoyed my time away and at the same time focus more on my work on Substack and growing that.

I did file an identity theft report with the Maryland AG office.

I don’t know how this is going to end, but I’m very pessimistic. But if Thomas Jefferson can write the Declaration of Independence without AI, I can handle no Twitter quite well.
