Funding IS Hard 🎣 · Startup Deal Desk

The best founders don’t start from scratch.

They start from experience.

From exits. From factories. From categories they already built once, for someone else.

This week’s founders come from three different worlds, healthcare, home energy, and beverage retail. But they share the same instinct.

They saw the system from the inside.

Then came back to rebuild it.

Welcome back to Founder Friday!

John Fraser & Dr. Russell Amundson · WhisperCare AI

John Fraser is a serial health tech entrepreneur who’s built and sold three healthcare IT companies, most notably Ability Networks for $1.2B. His most recent venture before WhisperCare AI was RocketDoctor AI, a public company on the Canadian Securities Exchange.

Co-founder Dr. Russell Amundson is a board certified neurosurgeon with 3 decades in clinical practice. He founded the 155-provider High Point Independent Physician Organization, served as National CMO at UnitedHealthcare across Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial lines, then moved to Optum’s AI team as clinical SME for computer vision, predictive analytics, and telemedicine.

Together they’re automating prior authorization, healthcare’s biggest administrative bottleneck, using a hybrid LLM and Knowledge Graph stack that validates medical necessity in real time.

The Bench:

  • Fraser: 3x healthcare IT exit CEO, $1.2B+ combined

  • Amundson: former UHC national CMO, ex-Optum AI clinical SME

  • Amundson founded and ran a 155-provider physician organization

  • Combined, decades of experience on both the payer and provider side of the exact problem they’re solving

John D. Thomas · Hearthion

John D. Thomas has spent 35 yrs in climate tech, starting in traditional automotive with full P&L roles at GM and Ford. He then moved to Tesla, where he served as the original head of the Model S program and built the factory that made it. From there he went deeper into the energy economy, working across startups in renewable power and storage, including ALTe Powertrain, NIO, and ESS.

At Hearthion, he’s applying that same build discipline to home energy, a battery integrated heat pump system with an AI controller, the first home energy and HVAC setup designed to pay for itself.

The Bench:

  • 35 yrs across GM, Ford, Tesla, and energy storage startups

  • Built the factory behind one of the most scrutinized EVs in history

  • Later roles at NIO (NYSE: NIO) and ESS (NYSE: ESS) focused on grid-scale storage

  • That build background is the edge behind Hearthion’s go to market: an existing 120,000-company HVAC installer network most startups can’t access

A résumé isn’t the company.

But it’s the closest thing to proof before there is any.

A $1.2B exit. A Tesla factory. A 7-Eleven beverage business built from the ground up.

None of it guarantees this works.

It just means these aren’t founders guessing for the first time.

Enjoy your weekend!
