It’s the same thing - the horizon line is your head height so it’s pretty easy to find because it’s where your head is.
And everyone that is standing in the sketch will have their head at the same height (if you are sketching on the flat).
Below is a brief look at the stages of the sketching process. It shows the initial location of the horizon line, vanishing point and framework. The second is how this translates to a rough pencil sketch / pencil framework.
I do a basic pencil framework based on the horizon line and vanishing point. All the lines above the horizon line will angle down towards the vanishing point and all the lines below will angle up.
There are two vanishing points in this example - where the road heads to and where the buildings in the background travel to on the right hand side. Again, the heads will all be at the same height, no matter how near or far they are.
Finally, I add colour - sparingly. As a guide, I like to allow for coverage of about 50% colour and 50% left white. And don’t worry about painting within the lines - it doesn’t matter. So much so that I only use a wide brush to do all of the painting.
With all these stages of process you could be forgiven for thinking this would all take a while - but my sketches only take about 30 - 60 minutes from start to finish
