For years I have been using coffee and red wine to add colour to sketches. But I have decided to start adding watercolour like I always used to. I have an old, small tin of half pans that I have cobbled together over the years and decided that’s all I need
I have finally reckoned that I can be more expressive using watercolour - and I only use it very sparingly so it’s pretty cheap. I am always mindful of the cost of materials. I find it more expressive to use with the colour very runny and colours running in to each other - it’s slightly more of an organic feel.
I realised my original foray back to the use of watercolour involved the use of too much brown - I hadn’t got away from my use of coffee so I seemed to be somehow emulating this. But I have realised the use of watercolour has opened up a whole new, transportable and minimal world.
My use of coffee and red wine was never a gimmick - it was practical. But it could be seen as something of a gimmick. I did it more so because of portability but I reckon the things I use now are just as portable. And it’s more what people expect and would want to do themselves.
So that’s it - I am beck to using watercolours. And I have provided a few examples in this post.

It’s all about getting your thoughts and feelings out onto paper without too many rules to follow - this is sketching - not drawing.
