What If the Hard Thing Doesn’t Change?

There are some prayers we pray thinking the answer will come eventually. The marriage will get better. The child will come home. The doctor will finally figure it out. The caregiving season will ease up. Somehow, the thing that broke will be put back together.

So we pray. And we wait. Then we pray some more.

But somewhere along the way, something can happen without us realizing it. We don’t just start waiting for the situation to change. We start waiting for permission to live again. We tell ourselves we’ll breathe easier when they’re okay, enjoy things when this season ends, make plans when life settles down.

And I think that’s where some of us get stuck. We don’t want to give up hope that things will change, but we’re also tired of putting our lives on hold waiting for them to change. So what are we supposed to do in the middle?

I want to walk you through three questions that have helped me with this. They won’t fix the hard thing, but they can help you figure out what to do today while you’re still praying for tomorrow to look different.
