How are you feeling as we race through this year of 2026? The same as last year? Different? In between? Are you tired of the fighting? The drama? As the chaos of the exterior continues to spiral into its dumpster fire there is one realization…
There is nothing left in the exterior to cling to.
In a world that has replaced religion with consumerism many are feeling empty. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I am not empty. I actually feel quite full and grateful and blessed. I am grateful for so much in my life: family, health, abundance…
But what anchors me and gives me depth is my connection to the Divine in all its forms.
I left structured Catholicism 20 years ago when it told me my actions were wrong. It was around the same time my mother died. So needing to fill the hole of Mother, and the hole of religion, I found the DIVINE MOTHER. And she has been my center ever since. She takes many forms: Sophia, Mary, Isis, Tara in the goddess realm. She is also Mother Earth, your own mother, the women of your own lineage, but especially your own soul in your own divine body, regardless if you are male or female.
I could write pages and pages about the Divine Mother (and I have!) but I want to keep this post practical and efficient.
Because procrastination has always been my achilles heal “there is always tomorrow,” was my attitude. As I age, I feel the tomorrows flying by.
There is only now.
A devotional practice can and should change over time. Consistency is key but the Divine is never stale! I think that’s part of the issue with organized religion-it became archaic dogma - unrelatable for modern times.
But there is still a need for structure and discipline.
Ritual gives structure.
Consistency builds discipline. We think we should just be disciplined, but it’s not like that. We need to build that muscle. And it’s time to release guilt when we miss a day or a week or a decade. The Divine is always there, ready to receive you, no matter how much time has passed.
Ok, we’re getting too long now. Practical Steps Ahead…
Choose your Devotion. What are you committed to? Who are you committed to? This is different than worship. I have learned over the last 20 years of spiritual study that the pure Divine does not want your worship, it wants your connection, your relationship, your embodiment. My practice has a ritual to it as a container to hold the energy. But the experience is a dialogue.
I ask questions, I get answers. I get guidance. I get support.
The 21 emanations of Tara have always resonated with me. She is the focus of my devotional practice. But I also wrote a trilogy dedicated to Sophia, the Feminine Face of God. Your practice doesn’t have to look a certain way or follow a certain rule book. Make it yours.
Who calls to you? it can be the one you grew up with like Mother Mary. Or one that came to you during hard times and never left. Be open to the signs and messages.
Trust Yourself to follow what resonates.
Writing as Devotion-I have talked about this over and over. A book I refer back to frequently is The Secret of Writing by Natalie Goldberg. Every word in my copy of that book is highlighted and underlined. Writing can be a devotional practice.
That also goes for Dancing as Devotion, Painting, Skating, Hiking, Gardening, Weaving…you understand. Anything you do with love and reverence works here.
You are the Vehicle for the Divine in your actions, in your joy, in your sorrow, in your breath.
Play devotional music: gregorian chants, chamber music, buddhist mantra chanting, Kirtan music. Music shifts your brain and opens the pathways to your intuitive free self. It is the connection to the magic.
Create your space. Daily practice in the same place builds the energy. Over time, it is easier to tune in. I’ve mentioned my prayer chair in the past. I’ve linked my video from 5 years (!) ago.
Set an intention for your time. And set a timer. That helps. It can be for 5 minutes if you want. Be kind to yourself. Don’t think it has to be a certain way. Give yourself two weeks of 5 minutes a day. Keep a journal. See what patterns emerge. The connection to the Divine is a connection to your deepest self-Your soul.
That is what the world needs right now. This is what YOU need right now.
