Late last night, everyone else in my house asleep, I had a very exciting and secretive call about something book-related. And this morning, my fourth novel, THE DROP, released in the USA. A week or so ago, I heard the book had been selected as an Amazon editor’s pick.

Before that… it had been quite quiet but for me beavering away on book 5 and generally feeling like a crazed imposter who once dreamed he was a novelist.

Writing is like this. Your inbox echoes. Your blank page taunts you. Months can go by, and all of a sudden STUFF happens.

It’s addictive, this process. Maybe even a little unhealthy. But a first draft of my fifth book is now complete, and I get my brain back for a short while. I will be able to have conversations with people I love without having to will myself to remember simple words like fridge (“you know… the tall box with the… with the cold things in it that you eat…”). My eyes will reacquaint themselves with the Middle Distance and the mythical realm beyond. I’ll start to have dreams again.

But, already I need to write. A short story maybe? A screenplay? Maybe dig out an old, sickly trunk novel, see if I can do anything to help now I’m older and wiser? My Big List of Story Ideas just hit 20k words. I want to have a look through it. See what inspires me.

No. I won’t write anything else for a few weeks. I can do it. I’ll just finish this update. Then I’ll stop.

It means a lot to me to have another book hit the shelves in North America. Having grown up (like many UK 80s and 90s kids) surrounded by US culture, and having had a half-American best friend since childhood, I feel that vast land’s cultural beats in my soul. So many US authors I count as heroes (King, Levin, Matheson just for a start), so it’s lovely to be able to hang out (nervously) with them on the same shelves.

You can grab paperback, digital and audio versions of this wicked little book here:

Amazon/Kindle

Kobo

Barnes and Noble

PS And in case you missed it, I delved into all things THE DROP, as well as my own musical, punk-rock past on the MASS MOVEMENT PRESENTS podcast.
